Apple is leaving IBM Powerpc CPU, next year Apple will use Intel processors....
Now why Amiga Inc don't try to reach an agreement with IBM ? IBM will lost many cpu orders in the future, but helping Amiga world (eg amigaone) they could help themself...... It's only an opinion Petengy |

The trouble with that is Amiga is no longer the mass volume formiddable force it once was and so IBM would simply not sink revenue into a new platform which may or may not succeed.
I think most Amigans have thought this at some point but for now I don't see it happening. But then Bill Mcewen kept the Amiga alive on pipe dreams and came to agreement with some awesome companies. Just goes to show that anything is possible.

Amiga Inc. doesn't make or sell hardware. What can they do to make up for the few million chips per year that Apple bought?
What would be needed, if anything indeed is needed at all, is for others like Eyetech, Troika, Olegil, etc. to design using an IBM chip, but the few hundred or perhaps thousand or 2 thousand units that could be sold to Amigans would still never even begin to make any difference at all compared to Apple's quantities, and Apple honestly was relatively small percentage of PowerPC orders in general. Both IBM and Freescale have made comments that they are not concerned about losing Apple as that loss isn't significant enough to bring down their own businesses, which they claim are by far dominated by the embedded systems industry. Wheter that's just PR babble or die-hard druth is up to you to decide for yourself in believing it or not, but no one seems to be particularly concerned that this situation is even a problem to be made up for.

dear all
You are right, but I was thinking about Palladium* (=total control of "your" PC)too, I was thinking about all the people are looking for something else, something new, something different from PC/Intel/Microsoft based platforms. Amiga world it's small, very very small, but maybe IBM, or some other big company (maybe from China ) could see in Amiga what these people need. It could be possible that they decide to spend some money trying to make "big" this little world.I'm dreaming I know but amiga, mac, and dos too were born from dreaming (and lucky) people Pet PS sorry to all for my real bad english !!!!! *who doesn't know it....search on google........ |

A lot of people are looking at this from the wrong angle.
Clearly, Apple are aware that this shift is going to alienate a lot of their users, however they are willing to take the risk because they know PPC tech just isnt as competetive as it should be, in today's market. I wonder, if Apple is moving away from PPC why should Amiga stay? Also, are there really that many people willing to try "something different"? If it means investing in very expensive hardware and relearning everything you know about computers from the ground up, I doubt it? The weak A1 sales figures help prove that point, besides Apple and Linux have pretty much filled the "something different" niche already. In any case, the PC market is moving at such a phenominal rate, that something-different-but-not-too-different is only 3-6 months away... Next stop multicored 64bit CPU's, Physics PU's and SLI GPU's, to name a few. |
