A2000 floppy cable, where from?
« on: July 19, 2005, 03:46:05 PM »
Hi all,

Well, I've done my money on eBay and when my A2000 has arrived it's been minus a floppy cable (looks like the machine's been gutted and left in a shed).

Where can I get a floppy cable? Will a PC floppy cable work?

I'm also looking for original case screws (there's about 3 left in the case).

From what I remember of the A2000 a PC floppy cable won't work.   As for screws, I suggest you get standard PC Cases screws as they are easy to find.

If you like I can take a picture of my A2000's floppy cable (has 2 diskdrives on it).

@ leofoe

I've had a good look and I've not been able to find any decent pics of the insides of an A2000 so, yes, that would be much appreciated.

@ Delta

Yep, I've used PC cases screws (years of PC support for friends have left me poor in money but rich in PC bits) but I'm really looking to restore my Amy.

Picture 1 shows the complete cable. Floppydrive number 1 (df0:) is attached to the end marked with a "1" and number 2 (df1:) to the middle connector.
Picture 2 shows the number 1 connector. As you can see the wires number 4 and 6 are crossed, by reversing the wires 4, 5 and 6. The red wire is number 1.

IIRC you can use a single floppydrive with a normal unmodded PC cable, because they are the same Before the twist.....

Yes, but you may have to modify the PC floppy cable depending on the amount of floppy drives you intend to use.

1 internal floppy drive:
The PC floppy cable usually has three identical 34-pin connectors on it, one that goes on the controller and one for each of the two possible internal floppy drives, A: and B: (they may have another two weird-looking connectors, intended for old 5 1/4" drives, but disregard them). One of the connectors is located after a twist in the cable, simply cut this part of the cable off. You are now left with a decent lenght of cable, with a 34-pin connector in both ends and no twist. This works perfectly for your Amiga's internal floppy drive (DF0:)

2 internal floppy drives:
Instead of cutting off the last connector, you will need to straighten out the twist and make 2 new twists instead.
Twist #1: Pins 4-6 Twist #2: Pins 10-12
The connector with these twists is for DF1:
You will also need to set a jumper in your Amiga to enable DF1:

Isn't that for the A4000 HD drive? See here.

Well, yes and no. The 10-12 twist is not really necessary, it just makes things easier. Without the twist you will need to rejumper your DF1: drive as DS1, with the twist in place you just leave both drives jumpered as DF0: (DS0) and the 10-12 twist takes care of the DS0/DS1 (the twist swaps these signals).

@ PaSha, leofoe and jeffimix

Thx guys. The pics and advice are great. I will make my own.

@ Cyberus

No, apparently I've missed out on that wonderful opportunity (http://contact.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ReturnUserIdHistory&requested=retrogeek001) :-(

He woulda liked me. I have an A2000 :-)
