Dunno if it's cool or not, but it's certainly interesting.

It'll be the beginning of the end for high performance PPC on the desktop if it comes to pass. I think the only thing driving PPC scaling to where it is now has been Apple holding a gun to their head and/or begging.

Hmmm, MacOS-X on x86 and the possibility of DIY PC hardware running it.

I better hide the valium and razor blades before my boss (Loves all things appple, despises all things PC) finds out

Hmmm... seems a shame to me.

I like a bit of diversity.

Well, we've heard this rumour before, but let's hope it's not true.  Otherwise it'll stop just about any company (like MAI) from even THINKING about getting a PPC based motherboard up and running.   Hmmmm....

Perhaps they will be using Intel chips - but for servers or even ARM chips in a handheld.  I personally cannot believe that they'd switch for desktop use, considering the amount of marketing they've put into PPC and the risks of MacOS being used on generic hardware.  I suppose we'll just have to wait until Monday...

Even if Apple were leaving PowerPC, don't forget that IBM will be starting to sell PPCs to Microsoft (the new Xbox runs on a tri-core 970) - development isn't going to suddenly stop on the architecture.  It could even be a good thing, if it leads to a glut of G4s and G5s for us to mop up :-)

I Agree with the article that Apple will potentially lose more
customers with another design switch.  Who would buy Apple
hardware, when OS X could possibly run beside XP?  Apple
has spent too much money making a very fine OS to switch
platforms now.  If anything, I think Apple sales have improved
to an extent because of their "niche" in the market.  I read
somewhere trying to dig up powerbook G5 info, that supply
has finally caught up with the demand in several of their
market areas.  I see more and more ibooks and powermacs out
in use than ever before.  Well, if they do switch, I hope
they like the idea of just selling ipods and os software.

or even ARM chips in a handheld.

Now is not the right time to launch a pda.
Another possibility is an iPhone. But is apple really ready for that...
An iTablet? maybe... A wireless lower cost Cintiq would be very popular.
But it´s probably just ARM-processors for a video ipod.
Apple can´t just sit back and take stuff like this http://ipodlinux.org/Video_Player
Apple did it right the first time, bring back the Newton!
