that might be a stupid question but can you burn (program) your own Kickstart ROMs with an EEPROM programmer. I remember vaguely that a friend of mine burnt Kickstarts for the Amigas.
But that was in 1989.
Any ideas if it's possible and what one needs to make it possible.

Un-encrypted Kickstart ROM image
1 * 27C400 for 16-bit Amiga's
2 * 27C400 for 32-bit Amiga's

ROM Tower for some A3000's or alternate EPROM.

Load the programmer software, select the device, select an option that resembles HIGH WORD(all good EPROM programmer software supports 32-bit splitting over two EPROMS). Program

Repeat for Low Words.

On every other platform of the same vintage I don't think these issues would come up.. the only reason the Amiga is different is because there is so much money flowing around the hardware for these still - $40 for a rom chip is off the planet.  The money isn't going anywhere useful - the current owners are just milking the rights.

Sometimes I wish the Amiga would become a 'dead' platform like all the rest, and that all the opportunists would move on.

So in short, I think it is just fine to copy kickstart roms.  Just like I'm fine with downloading/running old games without owning the originals.

I don't see why that one won't work.  I had the best luck myself when I read the contents of the ROM and burnt the ROM using the same programming unit.  Also, have a UV eraser handy in case things don't work the first time!

You need an adapter board for the Willem to blow 27C400 EPROMS

1. setup a barebones pc with a cheap old mobo- socket7 or so with keyboard and monitor and floppy.

2. get eeprom chip same size you need.

3. get ziff socket same size as eeprom as mobo bios.

4. romove bios chip from mobo put in ziff and put ziff on mobo

5. get bios burner off internet for mobo.

6. startup pc with original bios.

7. go into bios

8. change all ram and bios caching options on

9. restart mobo

9. load burn disk

10. put image to burn on disk (amiga rom image)

11. change burn image from pc update bios to amiga bios name (you might have to change kickroms name)
 
12. just before you burn image open ziff and put in eeprom to burn to.

13. burn image

14. shut down remove eeprom  and replace with original.

I have not used this to burn amiga kickroms because i have never needed it to but I have burned other stuff. you might have to modify the above sequence depending on the motherboard setup. i also have not checked rom pinouts and stuff. this procedure has been used for years to burn game roms for old consoles. i thought i was so clever when i came up with it, then i found out that at least one other person had done it before. use this flipped out knowledge at your own risk.

as long as the pinout is the same the eprom length doesnt matter usually. since the code will only address what it uses. however if you use a larger eprom than you need it overlap areas of your memory map and cause crashes.  :-o

With 3.1 ROMS being a bit on the scarce size, does anyone know if there is a way to use cd32 ROMS for the A1200? :-?
