How does the Amiga Forever Emulator stand in the community. Would any one recommend using it?

It seems to be good from what I've heard.  The bonus features are worth the price.
Try blazedmongers new Free Universal Computer kit, available with the GUI toolkit Your Own Universe, the popular IT edition, Extremely Reliable System for embedded work, Enhanced Database development and Wide Area Development system for telecommuting.

Best part of it is that it's 100% legal way to get Amiga roms for emulator. It's been about only product that has not been accused on anything.

And yes.. It's quite nice package too. With add on softwares etc.

I recommend Amiga Forever & Amithlon but some members of the Amiga community hate people what use Amiga emulators and attack at all costs, Example of these attacks click HERE

It all depends on what you want really, emulators are great for people like myself to run all my favorite Amiga programs at great speeds on hardware i choose and have Windows to run Software/games which Amiga does not have.

I would recommend you get Amithlon aswell as Amiga Forever.

I want to get an Amiga computer one day. The Amiga world seems so fractured right now that I'm not sure who is who or what is what now. I will probably go with the emulator for now and continue to monitor Amiga and this site.

@JoannaK

I agree - the ROMS alone are make it worth picking up Amiga Forever.

@Paul_Gadd

I've not run into that mentality *yet*, I'm nearly half hoping that I do. Anything that enables old and new members to join the Amiga Community is a Good Thing in my opinion.
I've not played with Amithlon (yet) but I've been reading up on it and I'm more than a little interested in buying a copy.  If you could pass on any experiences, good and bad, you've had with it I'd be grateful.

@arkanoid
Play around and enjoy yourself - you'll be pretty suprised by the quality and usability of the emulation.
I've had UAE sitting on my Linux machine for quite a while -- usually for playing around with old games when the mood took me.

But it was only recently that I REALLY started playing around with it for more serious projects.

When I went over the costs of building a professional edit suite with my wife, her ultimatum was that I upgrade her computer before I started on such a costly project. To cut a long story short I gave her MY PC and set it up for her needs and took her old 'clunker'..
Unfortunately for me, running KDE on her machine was a disaster... anyone remember running GEOS on the 64? it brought back memories. So I swapped and changed Xwindow managers - searched for 'lean' software -- but nothing gave me a great solution.
Long story short - AmiWM gives Linux a general look of my old Amiga 2000 (but lacks a lot of the usability), for kicks I thought it would be funny to run UAE on it. The suprising thing was that it ran pretty pretty fast - on par with with my unladen Xwindows, and had more features.

So now instead of booting into XWindows - I boot into UAE and run my Amiga emulation as my desktop.
A bit of digging and DMSing of old software and a trip to Aminet gave me all the desktop software I need to get by AND play all the old games I still love.

I've since completed my edit system - but even though it has 'grunt' to spare - I only use it for editing (and one or two desktop apps). I still use 'the clunker' as my main 'desktop' computer. If not for UAE I probably wouldn't have returned to any semblance of an Amiga. Now I look forward to seeing what is developed in the future.

Play around with and enjoy yourself - if anyone gives you any greif over it, just ignore them.

After all - it's only 1's and 0's.

Siggy.

Thumbs up here. My 1200 is on it's way to the graveyard. Now since it's a 1200/Mediator/1260/Voodoo3/SBlaster/IDEExpress, you can see it's far from the default standard out-of-box.  Fault finding is a royal PITA.
Amithlon is currently not legally available, but AmigaForever is available either online (direct from Cloanto), or on CD-ROM (recommended).
Installation is a cinch and I upgraded mine to OS3.5, then to 3.9 without any real hassles. Add in Freewheel (Cheers Paul Gadd!) and you have full mousewheel support.
It's breathed a new lease of life into many 'suspended' projects.
Both Imagine and ImageFX are so much more useable now, I'm able to happily get back into using them again.
I know it isn't what a purist would call a real Amiga, but until the complete A1XE/OS4 combination is available, this'll do me fine.

Suit you sir? Yes indeed!!

My A1200 died 2 years ago.  I bought Amiga Forever when I had a areally low spec PC, and soon lost enthusiasm for it because of the lack of speed.  Once I had a decent (read 1GHz Plus) PC, it became faster than my original A1200 - now I seldom use Windoze.  A superb package, well thought out, and the community supports it very well - highly recommend it.

Nope, Anything was runs on current Amigas (68K software) will run via emulation.

Plus the extra benefit is you have more compatibility with emulation than a souped up Amiga.

@Siggy

The only two bad things i can say i had with  Amithlon are.

1. Installing it so it duel boots with Windows was a complete nightmare

2. Getting some hardware to work was a pain,

Otherwise Amithlon is a superb piece of software and everyone who has a x68 box and is a Amiga user should get it.

If your after a emulator what is great for games and old software then UAE and especially Fellow are hard to beat.

You can purchase  OS3.9 if you choose to  but Amiga Forever comes with 3.1 so you can get it up and running straight away.

You DO NOT need to purchase any Amiga operating system with AF unless you want to run the latest AOS (some with tell you otherwise but it is lies).

@Paul_Gadd

I'm a Linux user, so the dual boot shouldn't be a problem.
I think the only questionable bit of hardware in this 'clunker'
is a Voodoo3 card, and if that causes a hiccup I have an old
Matrox card kicking around here somewhere.

Looks like I'll be moving from UAE to Amithlon.

Cheers,

Siggy.

No, I'm afraid your memory has let you down. I'm running AmigaOS3.9BB2 right now.
The only issue I had was having to change the Volume Name (in the UAE Volume Settings) to the actual name of the disk (ie AmigaOS3.9) for the upgrades to install. Not exactly difficult.
The only outstanding issue I have now is CandyFactoryPRO. No matter how much I tried, I cannot get the 1.03b update to install correctly (this was needed to stop it from crashing on start and to correct the tabs gadget path error). Somehow I've managed to sort this out (including D/L a 'tabs.gadget' file from the net), but the problem is that I can only save in 256 colours or less  :-?
Any ideas?

Will Amiga Forever run Amiga OS 4 when it comes out in a few months?
