Default BPPC FAQ SECTION

Patrik seemed to post about a FAQ section about BPPC.
I agree we could need something like that.Since there seem to be BPPC boards out there that need more power than others. And not everyone are the same know how to do when it comes to tecnical electrical connections off these cards.a section with pictures would be great. Also it often comes down to bad psus not giving enugh amps per channel\cabel output it would be cool to se what people use for stable power outputt on their cards.

It would good for new users off Blizzppc cards pehapps Bvision as well to know how to setup these things the best way.

Just a thought tho

Yeah, as they often require additional power, cooling and software patches/tricks it can be far from straight-forward to get them to work.

For example - how many with no prior experience of those cards would know that sometimes they stop functioning and need a reflash to be cured? Or that you often need to supply extra power via the motherboard floppy-connector or maybe the fan-connector on the Blizzard itself to in some cases get them to boot at all and in other cases to make them operate stable.

I know there are atleast a number of people around this forum who have quite some experience with these BlizzardPPC cards.

So, what do you guys/gals think of this idea?

You forgot to mention the troubles that rise up when you start talking about G-Rex pci busboards

Hello,

I'm a BPPC n00b and I'm also having trouble getting my board to work properly (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23098), so for people like me this would be great. Does anyone know if there is a BPPC based faq or any pages giving info on setting up a Revision 0 BPPC ?

Also, while all you PPC experts are reading this! :-) could someone please advice me if you can still experience power supply problems with the Mediator SX busboard? I have a feeling my problem might be to do with poor power supply to the PPC card...however the Mediator SX has a "pass through" adaptor bridging my PPC card to the Mediator busboard, with the ATX power connector plugged directly into this adaptor...shouldnt that mean my PPC is getting enough power??? Or does someone still think I need to try the Floppy power connector and/or PPC fan power connector tricks?

Is it safe to feed these connectors with +5v on a Mediator SX setup?? Is it a good idea to feed both the BPPC fan power connector *AND* floppy power connector with +5v ? Or would I overload the card by boosting both power tracks??

My advice :
Don't power your system in more than 1 input !
Because when there will be a bad contact, i'll create a kind of resistor/capacitor that might destroy quicly your system...
That happened to a few people that powered their BPPC+GREX or Mediator by the "PCI" bus and floppy connector.

I only power my 1200 by the PSU plug on the bus.
I change my poor old 200 Watts AT PSU for a "modern" 420 W ATX PSU on my GREX. To make it start, I cut a paper clip, put one close to the GREEN ATX wire and the other one to the close BLACK ATX wire, and plug an old "TURBO" PC Switch to POWER ON/OFF like a normal PSU. :-)
(I'm waiting for MisterHardware answer about GREX1200 ATX chip)

200W PSU can easily run the BPPC + BVision + 6 HDDs etc, as long as you feed extra power thru the floppy connector. This is the recommendation of the manufacturer, aswell. This is what I did for years, and no ill effects. Naturally YMMV.

IMO it's just waste of money to get some huge PSU for miggy, it doesn't eat that much.

PS. My system would not work reliably without the extra power cable connected to the floppy connector, regardless of the size of the PSU. AFAIK the problem was that the motherboard could not pass along enough juice thru the expansion-slot to run BPPC + BVision combo.

PPS. Naturally it's a different ballpark if there's some busboard involved (with a power connector).

that's why all quality 1200 busboards have their own power input...

Hmmm, back in the day I had a 200watt PC power supply wired into my A1200 power header and it ran my Blizzard PPC 603/040 combo just fine, even in a desktop.

I wish I hadn't sold that...
