Hello all,
I recently bought a a1200, it works fine but some of the disks I have dont work. Can anyone recomend a utility which will enable me to scan and fix errors on floppy disks. I used to have one for my 500 but cant remember the name of it. :-? Thanks |

Whatever you do, if you find DiskDoctor, leave it the hell alone. It's a doctor in the Harold Shipman sense of the word. Whatever problem you have with a disk, it will fix by making the disk totally (rather than partially) unusable.
Known to cause more problems than it fixed, when deciding to wether or not to continue including it with the OS, it's said the engineers opted to let the thing decide for itself, by allowing it to fix a faulty floppy containing the program

Well, I once could salvage partially a corrupted Lotus I Turbo Challenge disk which my son destroyed. A miracle! Later using DiskSalv I could fix the disk almost totally...

To transfer the files to the Amiga, you could network it or stick them on an MS-DOS formatted disk, which the Amiga and PC should both be able to read. Make sure that you format it double density (not high density) though, since the A1200 cannot read HD disks. Formatting a HD disk to DD isn't ideal, but will be fine as long as you don't use it for long-term archiving. IIRC Windows XP (and possibly ME) hides the option to format a disk to 720k, so you may need to use the DOS prompt. If the Amiga doesn't recognise the disk, then you may need to cover the hole opposite the write-protect hole with a bit of sticky tape, to trick the drive into thinking that it's double density. I think that WB comes with the device needed to read MS-DOS disks all set up and ready to go, but someone will probably correct me. |
