Default OS4 boot problem.

On switching on my A1, instead of the normal boot into Workbench, it loads a low res screen with a message saying,
"Deficons
cannot load preferences because: object not found."

and another:
"'Output window'
usbctrl: Unknown command
usbctrl failed return code 10"

If I try to change any system settings, I get something like:
"Error in file
ENVARC:Sys/wbpattern.prefs
object not found"

I've also reverted to US keyboard mapping. (my @ is an ")

I tried renaming 'Workbench' partition to 'Sys' but it didn't help.

I also posted on AW but I'd really like to get this sorted today as I'm going into hospital tomorrow.

Would that be the CMOS? If so, I changed it about two months ago. With a flat CMOS I couldn't boot at all.

@Vincent:

Ear op. If all goes according to plan I'll be out in a few days.

My boot problem is almost solved now. Seems I managed to move 'env-archive' from sys/prefs to sys/devs/prefs, although I can't remember doing anything that would have caused that.

Now I can boot OK but am still getting the, "usbctrl: Unknown command
usbctrl failed returncode 10" message on boot up.

Update:

Just when I thought I'd almost retrieved things, it looks like I've
buggered it up.

I thought I must have accidentally moved 'Workbenchrefs' to devs (I
subsequently copied the prefs drawer across from the OS4 CD), so I
decided to rename 'Workbenchrefs' to prefs.bkp and move the 'prefs'
drawer from devs to 'workbench.

I then tracked down 'usbctrl', from the OS4 update CD and copied it to
C:

Then I rebooted and the machine started booting into wb but the dock
didn't appear and the mouse and keyboard refused to work. Either
that or the machine had frozen. I tried switching off for a few
minutes but same result.

If I put the OS4 update CD in, I could boot, I thought (I now realise
stupidly) that I'd bachup my entire Workbench partition and install
from scratch, then replace my old settings one by one.
After backing up, I quick formatted the partition and rebooted,
expecting to boot from the CD and reinstall Os4 but instead it gets to
the second OF device check (after the 'booting' scroll bar but before
the 'kickstart' one) then says "None of the supplied boot units has
valid config file"
I can't get into OS4 at all now. :-(

@ Wilse

This sounds like you've lost some files.. Had a disk validation error lately ?

You might want to try Partition Wizard if your system partition is damaged...

@Entilzha:

I'm not sure what caused it and I was in hospital yesterday (out again
today) but my system is *sort of* working again.

I now have a strange stiuation where I can get to my router's config
screen via Aweb, but not online. I'm not really sure where I'm going
wrong but I imagine it's something silly.
