Default Problems at ISS and Space Shuttle

I hope they can fix the problems and prevent new disaster.

NASA decided Thursday not to stage an extra spacewalk to replace a failed circuit breaker that cut power to the International Space Station's last backup steering gyroscope.

NASA is down to the minimum of two gyroscopes needed to keep the station properly positioned in orbit.

The agency also said Thursday that neither the gyroscope failure nor recurring breakdowns of the Russian-built oxygen generator are believed to be serious enough problems to stop the planned May launch of the first post-Columbia shuttle mission.

With two gyroscopes not working, there were some concerns about whether the station could maintain position if Discovery had to be moved — using a robotic arm — away from the outpost to allow astronauts to repair a damaged heat shield.
