Hi
I want to ask:
1. Can AmigaOS 4 or Linux PowerPC use Altivec unit on G4?
Is there any application that use this FP Vector unit?

2. Pegasos plan to release Dual G4 CPU module.
Is there any similar CPU module for Amiga1?

3. I want to use Amiga1 with Video Capture card / external USB Video Capture device. Is this possible?
Any driver for the card / USB device?

1) I think there's Altivec support in the latest version of GCC, so I think taking use of Altivec will be possible almost immediately. None of the existing Amiga apps use altivec, I do not know about LinuxPPC apps.

2) I think A1 can use same CPU cards than some apple models (like the G4 Cube). There exists such cards also from third parties (up to dual 1.2Ghz)... Surely some driver/HAL work is needed, though. And kernel support for SMP. I do not think we se SMP support on OS4 anytime soon, but I bet some geek will implement some weird WarpUP2 library that enables AMP...

3) Not possible untill the needed SW is ready. I have no idea when...

I want to migrate (repatriate?) My capture/editing back to Amiga asap.

Someone in a previous thread said there was a rumour Matrox was coding the RT.X10 for A1....



If only that were true... I'd put up with poxy Premiere to get that EQ on A1.

Probably get the 256mb Parhelia as well (running G550 atm)

2gig ram ( In for a penny, in for a pound)

I kinda have a similiar setup in mind, but as long as we are figuring the "Ultimate AmigaOne" Then lets make it like this:

-Dual G4/1GHz or better (preferably with 2MB of L3 cache)
-2GB RAM
-Radeon9700PRO (AIW model with firewire when it appears)
-SoundBlaster Audigy2
-PCI LVD Ultra160 SCSI
-Two LVD Ultra160 SCSI 120GB drives (stripped for speed)

1) Linux/PPC's gcc toolchain has supported VMX (AltiVec) for a very long time, but there aren't many Linux/PPC developers to begin with and they typically use older Macs so there hasn't been much development. Some codecs may use VMX for FFT and whatnot.

VMX is actually pretty easy to optimize for. You can even do it in C as opposed to assembly. You can also use a compiler known as VAST to auto-vectorize your C or FORTRAN source for VMX and/or SMP.

2) Not yet. Somebody on this forum speculated that dual G4 cards for Macs would work, I *highly* doubt this is true.

If you have money to burn, THIS is a cool case ($380 though!)

Unless I see something better, I'm getting either one of these or maybe one of these. The second in particular is supposed to be pretty quiet, cos it's only got 2 case fans. It's also a bit smaller than a standard minitower (but deeper).

Yeah, those cases are pretty cool. There is a company here in the states that has these as well as some that are similiar to that other one you liked (scroll down the list).

I might be ordering a case tomorrow (as well as an AmigaOne and all the other stuff I need). Seems you guys are into fancy cases. I myself would prefer something plainer. Basically, I'm looking for something which:
*Is approximately the same color as the rest of my computer equipment, including my CDRW (pot black case with light grey drives - bad idea).
*Isn't noisy, and not too susceptible for vibrating (some sort of rubber dampening in the bays is a good idea).
*Can be opened easily from the side.
*Is spacious, but not too large (my old PowerTower is about the right size).
*Has an elegant design. Nothing lavish. A flat top is an advantage (I might want to put stuff there).
*is available in Norway.

Currently my eyes are on a Chieftech Dragon aluminium midi-tower, but suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for the info, there's a shop near where I live that stocks it as well - every now and then I go pretending to look at motherboards etc, but primarily to drool at that case :-D

I guess if I really wanted to I could save a bit and buy it (I'm going to have to save up for the price difference between the G3 and G4 anyway - that was a surprise announcement!), but I just can't justify to myself the ~$400 pricetag for a glorified shoebox :-P

Well, according to most net reviews (like this one), it's a pretty cool case mod. I've been considering it, but it's kinda big - I already have a PC under my table, so my new Amiga would sit on top (since it will be more silent and run cooler), and a full-size tower like that is a bit much to sit on my desk...
