Amiga 600 PCMCIA memory
« on: October 08, 2004, 10:41:51 AM »
Hi,
im looking for PCMCIA memory...
Is it only the "hard to get" SRAM type that works in the 600 PCMCIA slot?
Or is it possible to use any other types of memory?
Thanks for all help.

I'm under the impression that the PCMCIA memory is VERY slow, only use it when you have no other options and need the extra memory.

It's also possible to use "NVram" or "PSram".
My experience is that "PSram" is slower than "Sram".

IMO you have the best odds of getting a working memory card by looking for SRAM cards. You can also look at my PCMCIA memory compatibility page but there are only four cards listed there.

PS: People always say that PCMCIA RAM is so slow, but I think that it just has a bad reputation. People who say that sometimes just repeat what they have heard, they have not tried themselves, at the same time I do NOT claim that it is fast. But certainly in an A600 with 68000 processor it is fast enough. I never noticed anything slow about it. Maybe if you use it in a 68030 system it seems slow. Or maybe PCMCIA RAM just has an undeserved bad reputation.

Any Amiga machine with a PCMCIA slot should cope with PCMCIA RAM fine at a reasonable speed. I had 4Mb card in my A1200 in 2000 (it was unexpanded back then too) and it was fast enough to do most things!

PCMCIA ram is 16-bit, so if used in an A600 with only a 68000 cpu, it will work just fine speed wise, however when a 16-bit PCMCIA ram card is introduced to a 32-bit environment (e.g. 020/030 expanded A600 or A1200), then it will be noticeably slow.

I heard that PCMCIA memory can cause problems with games. (ie: Virtual Karting).

i have 4mb PSram and my a600 was pretty useless with 2mb chip ram only, but the extra ram have brougth new life to it :) as i have the rev1.3 that dont work with the apollo card this is my only option.. its a must but can be hard to find i have heard that 4mb pcmcia card is the max that the a600 will be able to use but i maybe wrong... and one for the ppl that say pcmcia ram is slow, with 7mhz a600 everything is slow anyway so dont worrie about speed, it works great!

@ kvasarnomad

Its not hard to find at all...............most Amiga users are not aware that you can usse Apple Newton Flash Cards on the A600. I have a 1Mb one that works dandy.  Just make sure they are the right voltage as some are 12v.....I have no idea what effect that would cause.

So anyway.just do a search on ebay and you will find them.  Sometimes I find them in the street in Manhattan............certain companies juts toss them out...........but usually they smash them to bits before doing so......:-(

Here is one for you right here buddy.....a little expensive though.

1Mb cards are not totaly useless.they will let you run WHDLoad and SCALA on the A600. That is good enough........although I would recommend minimum of 2Mb.
