Default a different problem with SP2's compatability

I know there's a thread already about SP2, C++ and Epson, but I have had a different problem...

[warning - long story and mild ranting ;-) ]

I installed SP2 perfectly well on Monday at about 4pm after checking out drivers/apps to see if there were any compatability issues. I only found one thing and that was StyleXP. Nothing else anywhere, good sign(ish)...

Installed the SP2 update before upgrading StyleXP (I wanted to see what would happen to StyleXP). SP2 installed perfectly well :-o ;-)

StyleXP plainly refused to work (I had to End task before explorer would come up). After going through all the firewall/anti-virus optionsI updated StyleXP and everything was fine...

Until I tried to play Half Life. No graphics card was installed apparently. So off I went to the display properties. Checked out the Advanced/Adapter and sure enough nVidia wasn't there... :-?

Checked out the site and they had no updates for SP2 (the latest update was from July which I was running anyway). Checked out my motherboard site for updated AGP drivers, which I downloaded, but there didn't make a bit of difference.

So I had a choice, SP2 or Half Life and Doom 3? Easy choice that one :-D

Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> SP2...

You will need to reboot the computer.... Ok....

<WinXP shuts down>

<Bios/mem check appears>

<Boot from CD:...>

<Main black WinXP loading screen appears>

Then suddenly changes into a BSOD before the picture even focusses... BSOD comes up with numbers and says to run anti-virus. Nothing else. No program or error line info at all.

:-? Oookaaay.....

Rebooted, used F8....

Just uninstalled SP2.... Let's go into Safe Mode.... Exactly the same thing happens.... Previous settings that worked.... BSOD'd....

Anything came up with a BSOD from that menu. Even using WinXP's CD after copying Setup Files to your computer and rebooting BSOD'd. Reinstall (without formatting as we only had one partition - not through my choice tho!) BSOD'd. Repair current installation (not through dos prompt) BSOD'd.

Two choices again - phone my bro-in-law or punt the PC out the window. I would've done the latter, but then I'd have to fork out the money for a new pc for Sioux's uni work ;-). So my bro-in-law came over and took it away. Copied all the important stuff (30Gb!) onto his HD and re-installed.

No idea what happened at all, there were absolutely no error messages that were visible to us so there was nothing we could do to figure out what was causing the problem.

Anyways... WinXP and SP1 is back up running perfectly well right now... and after 48 hours of no pc and net I would've been getting withdrawal symptoms if I hadn't gone out and bough Silent Hill 4 yesterday, pretty good so far (got back into the forest world for the 2nd time now) :-D

We've been using SP2 here at work. The most serious problem we all have in my office / bay area, is that our "Computer Locked" windows have corrupted graphics in them until you log back in or move the window all around the screen to cause it to redraw. All of our machines spontaneously BSOD then immediately reboot. That happend even before SP2 though.

You're problems make me thankful I just bought a G5 Mac. I am crossing my fingers that my days of messed up WindowsXP installs are over, at home at the very least. I didn't even bother to upgrade my PC to SP2 before tearing it down and setting up the Mac.

Hum,
there are problems with style and xp...
i prefer Windowblinds (3.1e which has more options than 4) anyway...

BTW...
i came across UXTheme Multi Patcher v2.5.1, that allows you to use any 3rd party M$style theme on Windows XP/SP1/SP2 or WinServer 2003 by patching the uxtheme.dll (444kb).

[ v2.5 didn`t work with sp2 ]

@Vincent
your card supports DX9.0c huh...

Doom3 works here fine, i`m just in the lower delta labs right now...

Doom3 works good here, on a 1.4gHz AMD, 256Mb ram and GeForce FX5200... and all the fancy graphics gubbins switched off :-P

I haven't really got that far yet just after EnPro Plant I think, but it's ok so far...

I just had to install the latest all-in-one driver for my motherboard and update the printer driver. Now everything works fine.
After SP2 installed, everything was fine as far as I noticed til I rebooted. I then found my printer would not print but was recognized. Browsing the hard drives took forever and a few other quirky things.

Half-Life still worked ... til Steam updated yesturday.

@Argo

Yeah, i noticed that the sp2 install reset all my `prefetch` hacks and switched on my virtual memory (to my slower c: drive as well!) ...
before, i was managing to run sp1 system in 512 ram only...
(but i`ve still got to get round to testing sp2 in ram)

So the system just now is a bit more sluggish with more memory overhead...
But funnily enough winuae runs just fine, if not faster...

@vincent
you card will run 9.0c...(er, eventually)

I'm not installing it until I install another game that needs it. 9.0b is working perfectly so I'm not messing with it at all ;-)
