But Odin, the world population does not seem the trouble considering the resources:
the western world's population isn't the biggest (I mean, China has twice the population of the US and western Europe put together), yet consumes the most, way most.
That's a serious attitude problem:
I mean, look at Las Vegas, or all those golf parks that need to be hydrated in the dryer parts of the Western world.

There's no problem procreating if the parents have the means to support ther offspring. If you're well off and you can support ten kids, that's fine, have them and be happy. The problem comes when there is insufficient support for the offspring. That's what leads to a child having a rough time, if he makes it, which I think is grossly unfair to the child.
And don't get me started on those who believe that having kids is a right and that society must support them even when they (the parents) knew all along they could not provide for them.

I am sorry, but I disagree with this in all terms. The society is for all individuals (and all the individuals are for the society), otherwise, we could as well live on our own, killing or robbing the other who incidentally obtained something valuable (because such a system works: it's natures way of survival of the strongest)
With that, a kid can't help being born (well, besides from committing suicide, that is).

But I agree the parents should get the bill of their actions.

very sad indeed. I think most of those deaths, mentioned in the title of this thread, could have been prevented with a different view on sex and procreation.

People have children they can't support for the following reasons:

- A natural mechanism against danger. People who live in abject poverty and could die very soon have lots of children. It's a natural response to preserve the species.

- Stupid religions taking away their contraception and demanding they have as many children as possible.

- Hoping the children will grow up and support the parents, because they are very poor.

To begin to control population growth then, the solution is easy: destroy religious dogma and eliminate poverty.

Because this is a ridiculous thread. Stop procreating, and humans cease to exist.

Resources are consumed, not created. Westerners use an incredible amount of resources, most of which aren't really needed to maintain our quality of life. Capitalism isn't very efficient.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

If there were a god(s), I imagine that it(they) took one look at "experiment earth" and though... "Bah! Another crap idea...".

I have to disagree with you there Kenny... Capitalism is all about efficency.. it's humans that are not very efficient.

Ok then, maybe I should have said commercialism is inefficient. Produce more than you can use because the more you produce the cheaper the price, and unless your price is cheap the stuff you produce is wasted anyway. Commercialism is an ideal of excess.

I don't see anyone here talking about striking a balance. So far it's been procreating is selfish, it's evil. people should be sterilised so the human race can cease to exist in ~100 years. Uptopian ideals for the far left, but it is ridiculous. Besides overpopulations isn't a problem in the west (at least the true west).

Oh, my dear god.

Not if it's your choice. Look, either this is a valid discussion or it isn't. If you think the thread is stupid, how can we take anything you say in it seriously?

Yes, that's exactly what people have been saying. You're not going off at the deep end at all, are you? It's nice to see someone so level headed.

Tell me you don't see the benefit in adopting an orphan as opposed to having your own children.
