Default Speaker volume query

Hello,

Have had two PC style speakers that i use with my Amiga 1200 that plugs into the L and R phono sockets. The query that i have is if i turn the volume dial to low, so the sound would be quiet, i get some crackLING, other noises that follow. This does normally happen with old speakers on TVs, etc. Can this problem be solved? As the speakers are good and LOUD! :-)

Cheers,

I've had that problem with most stand-alone speakers plugged directly into the outputs on the A1200.

I solved the problem by hooking the sound directly into a classic 1980's hi-fi - complete with turntable and very very good bass when played loud :-D

The volume goes from 1 - 8, I never have it past 4 or we have a mini-earthquake :-D

Sounds like the potentiometer (variable resistor) of the volumecontrol is nearly deceased. You could perform surgery on the bugger and see if you can replace the potentiometer

Until they break and turn out to be the one component you can't get near to after ripping your prized hi-fi apart. :-o

The remote still works though... Thank goodness for IR ;-)

So, just cleaning/oiling the inside wouldn't help then?

Most likely, no. In most cases a fooked volume control (or any control knob really) is an old fatigued pot-meter. Desolder the potmeter from the speaker and get an identical replacement from your local electronicsshop. Or get a pair of new speakers ;-).
