That's a good question, and I don't really know. I know trying to boot XP was agonizingly slow on my 2GHz Power Mac G5 (can't remember if that was using Bochs or QEMU,) but that may just reflect a crappy JIT, and anyway there's a big difference between emulating the whole PC and emulating the application code with the system calls translated to the host OS. I know for a while virtual-machine software was big business on PowerPC Macs for people that wanted to run PC software, and they'd always boast significant fractions of native speed, but I never used any of that myself.

darwine has included a x86 emulator for years... or you could just use wine with the qemu userspace emulation layer.

Ah, interesting. Too bad it's abandoned. Any idea how performance is on PPC?

I would imagine pretty slow but depending on what's running who cares.

Without JIT we see 386/40 kind of performance.
With jit ... perhaps P1/100 kind of ....

No one would have fun with any windows apps at that speed.
Better have a real x86 CPU there somewhere.

I agree we need affordable HW.

It could have been anoounced more carefully.

Other than that... Yes, it's a shame that not all projects happen as planned.

>4) A-Eon has funded development of Libre Office. Once again, my question is why?

We (the community, new customers) need native office tools.

Wine is not possible option. At least not before AOS4 runs on x86 or we have some 5Ghz PPC on Amigas.

Who would be that person?
The person could apply a work from hyperion or a-eon.

Money talks. If someone have millions to put in AOS4 SW development, please go ahead.

You can also post your offer to Trevor & co PM.

The Microsoft Surface is running a 1.3 GHz Quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3, the iPad a 1.3 GHz dual core A6. ARM is the future, can OS4.x be ported to ARM?

That was no "estimate". That was bait & switch, pure and simple. A-Eon could not have said, "Hey guys! We've got a new OS4 machine coming, and it's only $3000+! You want, just register your interest, LOL!" Maybe not enough people would jump at $3000, but many might at a price just a bit higher than a SAM.

What I remember is when the original A-Eon was formed one of the partners was Trevor's level-headed business buddy whose job was to ensure that the effort didn't turn into a giant money sink. That partner left, now we can see some of the reasons why.

The netbook is one "project" that seems to have worked as planned. It never had to actually exist, you know. Let's see if it continues to work for the next year.

Rogue claims there already are "marketing guys" for Hyperion, why not ask him about who they are?

http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforu...forumpost74374

In the past ssolie claimed he was the Hyperion rep, but now he claims he barely even works for them, despite being the "Project Team Lead". You'll never get a straight answer out of anyone associated with Hyperion, why haven't you learned that by now?

Where are you getting those numbers? They don't match up with even my crappy VM experience, let alone the claims made by professional virtual PC software of the time.

Actually, plenty of Windows software is usable at 100MHz. As long as you're not foolishly trying to run YouTube on a Pentium/100 or something, you can actually do a lot.

If they did, perhaps they can get some help from the AROS devs who ported AROS to ARM, as Jason was showing off at AmiWest via Raspberry Pi. It would be interesting to see a video of Jason's table. As usual, it's a question of who at Hyperion would do the work and who is going to pay for it.

I'd rather see the AROS devs stay focused on improving AROS so that we won't need AOS anymore.

The P5040/5021 isn't that bad right now. When the T5040 (with AltiVec) is introduced (hopefully in the 23.2 to 2.5 GHz range) it should be pretty nice.
But none of them have as many PCIe lanes as the PA6T.

And who knows what A-eon and Varisys are up to. Trevor mentioned that they were working on more then one project several months ago.

The X1000, while expensive, actually is a pretty nice system. Sure, its slower then a lot of X86s, but compared to other PPC and ARM ystems its quiite fast with a nice complement of expansion slots.
