Default Mike Singleton

Mike Singleton, the man responsible for the classic game Midwinter, has passed away in Switzerland. He was 61 and had been ill with cancer.

A respected game designer throughout his career, he was one of those pioneers who inspired a whole generation and whose name is as easily recognisable as Sid Meyer, Ian Bell and David Braben. Games like Lords of Midnight, Doomdark's Revenge and Midwinter will forever be remembered by anyone who played them for their sheer atmosphere and unprecednted scope.

As a huge fan of his games and someone deeply inspired by his work, the world is a little darker today. He will be hugely missed.

At the time of his death, Mike was working with programmer Chris Wild on an iOS release for Lords of Midnight. Chris has posted his own touching tribute on his blog.

Eurogamer did a Midwinter Retrospective and in the comments there is typically humble contribution from Mike himself, denying responsibility for another classic he has been widely credited with: Carrier Command.

RIP Mike. You have left us a legacy to be genuinely proud of.

Ian Braben and David Bell ?

Is that some kind of sarcastic remark? I wouldnt have said anything - but when talking about names being easily recognisable - i can only hope this is some sort of dig that escapes me!

Come on - these are the creators of possibly (IMHO) the greatest video game of all time. I hope when their time comes you get their names correct!

Anyway touche' RIP Mike Singleton!

Mike really set the bar high with what could be done with a C64/Spectrum with Lords of Midnight, before this it was all shoddy Pacman/Space Invaders rip off.

He really expanded the expectations of 8 bit games players despite the fact he was already a 30something at the time.

Just me being an idiot, old age catching up, call it what you will. Fortunately, most people who remember Mike's name will know who I meant, even if I inadvertently mixed up their surnames.

...but thanks for pointing out the error.
