I have a hard drive with loads of stuff I need to recover, but it's formatted in either EXT 3 or 4 (whichever Kubuntu uses as standard). My options for recovery is either my wife's windows PC or my Morph OS machine.
Can either read the file format adn retrieve the data? Failing that, I suppose booting with a live CD is an option.

Yeah, you're right.
The best way to deal with this is a Live CD boot. Heck, its often the best way to recover a Windows hard drive.

Thats mostly what I figured. I had seen a few tools to read EXT stuff on windows, but most of it also comes with "oh hey, you might F up your data" warnings

Check out http://www.ext2fsd.com/ and http://ext2read.blogspot.com/ It has limited ext4 support, and defaults to read-only mount for ext4 (so, in effect, zero *real* risk your data will be lost) |
