I just noticed this listing on eBay :

That's 4 x Acard Ultra Wide SCSI to IDE bridges for $170US.

That's not a bad price I think. They only ship to USA, so I'm out of luck. Does anybody else need these puppies?

^^^^^^^^^this means you cannot write to the drive hooked to it. The firmware flash tools will not allow a read/write firmware to be added to fix it in my experience.
I have run into these, they technically are Aec-7720UW/WP
WP meaning write protect.

So these are really for CD-ROMs, then. I hope whoever bought them realizes that.

Crikey! Well spotted Mechy! I only googled the model number the bloke provided. I would have bought those if they'd delivered to Australia.

If anybody here bought them, I hope you have more luck than Mechy on the firmware flashing front.
