Default Why are computers in general not appreciated?

This might be more specific to the UK not sure, but... I recently went on a visit to the national museum of computing at Bletchley Park and while I did have a good day out I was struck by how the entire museum was being run on a shoestring compared to other museums I had been to! Why are computers which have played such a massive part in our development over the last ~30 years not celebrated more do you think!? There are some seriously impressive museums in this country but none based on one of the most important inventions of man!

Just a bit of a rant to be honest I Wanted to get of my chest! They did have a nice Amiga 500+ in the museum although it was heavily outnumbered by beeb micros and Sinclair's!

I think there is a big gap between the people who create/build computers and those who use them.

The creators/builders are a small percentage of people who can actually appreciate what goes into a computer where as the majority of the population see computers as tools that are useful until they are replaced.

This is a lot like car enthusiast. I've never met one who didn't like to get elbow deep working on the cars they love.

They used to be a lot more respected and appreciated before they became everyday items. Now the home PC is merely viewed as another appliance.

Back in the early days of home computing, like when I got my first Amiga, I remember being one of very few people that actually owned my own computer.
Friends would come over and just look in awe at that machine, while our own school had one lone Mac for several hundred students to use.

Back then, you had to know what you were doing to keep one running, regardless of what make or model it was. In the modern age of iPad's that take no skill nor thought to keep functioning properly, computers have sadly just become tools to get things done.

Only geeks care, everyone else has as much interest in it as they would a microwave oven museum.

We're lucky that the code breaking has cultural significance because of it's role in the war, or there would be no museum at all.
