Ironic as it may seem hygiene does not equate to being civilized, the Aztec would bathe 3 or 4 times a day, probably to wash off the blood from the pumping hearts ripped from the chests of adults and children alike. Hitler was fastidiously hygienic too and he was far from most peoples ideal of a civilized man.

G.K. Chesterton argues in The Everlasting Man that the problem with these cultures was that they were TOO civilised.

No disrespect to the Sumerians, but remember that a lot of those are the first instances we have records of, largely because the Sumerians are the first people we know of with a real writing system. Doubtless people had law systems of some kind before then, and I guarantee you they had love songs

To be fair, I am 100% certain that the Bangladeshi and Pakistani muslims I worked with missed the memo on the washing of their backsides and genitals, as well as their hands and bodies. I don't think it had anything to do with their religion, tho - every culture has their version of the American Redneck Hillbilly.

Needing rules about such as whether one uses the left or right hand or foot to step into or out of toilet, squat toilets and stones is a step towards civilization?

Qadaa' al-Haajah

A Muslim must first find an acceptable place away from standing water, or people's pathways or shade. They are advised that it is better to enter the area with the left foot, facing away from the Qiblah.

While on the toilet, one must remain silent. When defecating together, two men cannot converse, nor look at each other's genitals, and especially not handle each other's genitals. A man should not touch his genitals with the right hand.

One should sit on the feet (e.g. squat) keeping thighs wide apart with the stress on the left foot.

Muhammad specified that one should only use an odd number of stones (preferably three) to cleanse the anal orifice after defecation and then proceed to a different location to perform Istinjaa.

Only perform Istinjaa of the anus and/or genitals with the left hand and water. If Istinjaa is being done on a hot day, then the person should start from the front to the back and then from the back to the front and the third time from the front to the back. If Istinjaa is being done on a cold day, then he should begin from the back to the front. After wiping, he should wash his hand first and then he should cleanse himself with two fingers and three fingers if necessary together with ‘pouring’ water. When using the two fingers, one should keep the middle finger in front and the ring and index finger behind it. After beginning with the fingers in this position, he should bring the ring finger forward and rub with the middle finger and ring finger. Thereafter, he will wipe with the index finger, if necessary. He should continue until all the impurity and smell is removed. The left over water after Istinjaa is paak only if there is no impurity in it.”

At the risk of being shot down, a lot of these customs are ancient and tribal and make their way into more modern texts as basically "sanitory guides". Simular cultural traditions exist in many regions from Europe to SE Asia.

In Australia things can be very different by necessity. I remember once being in the bush and needing to go, so I went behind a tree. I was doing my business when a Rabbit came around behind the tree and started doing it's business as well. Jokingly i knodded towards it and asked it if It's poo stuck to its fur. To my astonishment the rabbit shook it's head in reply.
So I picked it up and wiped my bum with it.
