I believe this is a 2 stage process. Ignore the CD drive until your Hard drive is set up correctly and running. Then plug in the Squirrel and CD Drive and boot from the HD and stick in the Squirrel set up disk and run the install script off there. I'm not sure if 3.5 includes full scsi support or not. I know 3.9 is suppossed too. I've got that on my 4000D. Dave G 8-) |

if you intend to install OS3.5 then you realy need to fit 3.1roms. a set of 3.1 sys discs will cost you £11.75 from amigakit, and the roms are £17.99 + p&p
1st install wb 3.1 connect scsi cd & switch on 2nd install scsi software disc (1) see that CD0 is in dev/driver`s in tooltypes edit DEVICE=Squirelscsi.device UNIT=3 rename CD0 to CD3, double click to mount it then reboot. you should now see your cd disc when you insert it. install OS3.5 is in 2 steps pre-installation and main installation. you might find that after the pre-install your CD3 icon has disapeared from dev/drivers ? it happens . just do the same as above again. then do the main install of OS3.5 dont forget to fixfonts. this will get you up and running. |

Thanks for the info.
I'm not sure if OS3.5 can be installed on a clean drive? I was planning to create a boot floopy disk which had support for the CD ROM. If I boot from that and then run through the installation stages, I think it should work on a clean drive? If not, I've read somewhere that the OS3.5 CD contains WB3.1 so I can install that first and then continue with the other installation steps. My Kickstart 3.1 ROMS are on order, so will obviously have to wait for them to arrive before installing OS3.5 :-) |

you cannot install OS3.5 on a clean hd.
you must have a wb sys installed first, albiet wb3.0 or 3.1. as wb3.0 has been freely available on amiga format cd`s since approx 1998. i dont see any problem in sending you a copy of the install disc. OS3.5 does have wb3.1 on it. if you do install OS3.5,from wb3.0 then 3.1, you WILL find your CD3 icon missing. been there :-) its a real pain to install from wb3.0. thats why i recommend for you to get a set of wb3.1 disc`s in the first place. by the way i hope you have at least a 8mb mem card installed? an 030 accelerator would be better. |

I have a 030 accelerator card with 4MB Fast Ram in addition to the 2MB Chip Ram...so hopefully that will be enough?
Not sure if it's worth upgrading...haven't really looked at the options or prices yet. I'm just waiting for my Kickstart 3.1 ROMs to arrive before I attempt the installation. I am getting a bit confused though, some people say OS3.5 can be installed on a clean drive and others say you need to install WB3.0/3.1 first. If I need to install WB3.0 first, then I will need the WB3.0 Install disk. I have all the other original disks, just not the install disk. I'm thinking how it would be possible to install without a prior installation of WB3.x I guess just having a floppy boot disk with CD ROM support isn't enough? I've heard if I do this, it will not "see" the Hard drive and therefore try to install OS3.5 to the floppy? Can anyone confirm this please? Thanks :-) |

Alert: post has been hijacked by Amiga moron!
Seriously sorry wandeep. It sounds like maybe you didn't get yours working. You are a lot closer than I am though. Your device is actually being read. I have this really crummy CD drive I bought off Ebay that said in the ad it did SCSI and right on the CD-ROM it says "parallel CD-ROM." It's H45 Technology Corp. Quick CD Parallel Port CD-ROM(yes I was dismayed to see that printed right on the case of the unit. another poster informed me of the existence of an Amiga Parallel CD-ROM driver from Aminet, which is experimental and Amiga parallel I guess is pretty slow, haven't tried it yet.) I got the PC drivers for it. I got the Squirrel disks (and figured out how to decompress dms to adf with this nice BSD/Linux prog called xdms) and I do the "Surf-Install" from I'd guess it's disk 1 of this 4 disk set that I think originally came with Squirrel. That goes fine. Then I try "SCSI-Install" and I get this error: FOREACH: Can't examine file or drawer DOS Error Type: Unable to locate a file or drawer It obviously wants some partition called FOREACH: but why? I don't get why the SCSI-Install prog would do that. It should just find the correct volume on the bootable Workbench: partition I would think. Only other partition on my HD is Work: and that has all my games as well as other apps in it. And strangely: I too get "device already mounted" when I click CD0 in DOSDrivers Good luck figuring ANYTHING out from my post here. I'll be very impressed if anyone knows what I should do. At least this SCSI-Install asking for a partition it shouldn't problem solved would be nice so when I actually get a real SCSI CD-ROM it'll do something. You never know. I got it connected right. Maybe this CD-ROM will work once I get SCSI-Install run proper. Thanks for ANY type of attention to this post.

Hooking a parallel port device up to a SCSI adapter sounds like a very bad idea, in addition to most assuredly not working it may be able to break things.

see post above for this. also, i am wondering since squirrel is a PCMCIA to SCSI adapter, why does it have 2 install programs on different disks: SCSI-Install and one called Surf-install. It looks like there is 4 disks that came with this thing. Of course the one I bought didn't have any software with it so I got it from another person here. Just please if you know why SCSI-Install is asking for FOREACH: then answer. If you don't know what that is then don't. I guess I shouldn't have said I was an Amiga retard because I'm really not retarded enough to think a Parallel only device is going to work on a SCSI chain. For most people who use Squirrel: did you do Surf-Install or did you do SCSI-Install? Did you then just run SCSIMounter and your CD drive worked? Help on this please note: it's also got another disk that's for installing Jaz Drive devices but I'm not going to be using that of course.

First of all, remember that there were two versions of the Squirrel SCSI adapter made:
1. Surf Squirrel - which includes a serial port. 2. Squirrel - which does NOT include a serial port. Make sure you have the correct install disk(s) for your adapter, you can find them by following this link: http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/squirrel And remember - the CD0: icon information SHOULD look like this: ACTIVATE=1 DEVICE=squirrelscsi.device UNIT=3 FLAGS=1 With squirrelscsi.device as DEVICE - NOT cd.device, scsi.device or squirrel.device. The UNIT should also be set to 3 and not 0. This is the CD0: icon information, but have you also looked at the actual mountlist? Just open CD0 in a text editor (like Ed), you can do this by entering the following in shell: Ed SYS evs/DOSDrivers/CD0One important entry in this file is FILESYSTEM, make sure that the file mentioned here exists on your system (should be in Sys:L) |

As for the FOREACH: problem you mention, I don't think that it has anything to do with a missing volume, instead I think it refers to the type of problem it encountered in the install program. I assume you try to run the prog in shell, and if this is the case, try to cd to the directory with the SCSI-Install file before starting it. |

Surf-install is for installing the serial port software. And remember that unless you have a serial port on your squirrel adapter, you might have the wrong disks. |
