Talking Printers working on OS4

From a previous post:

Quote:
I got my HP Photosmart printer today and now have it working via network using netprinter.device and HP_Photosmart printer driver.

Ironically it was easier to set up and get running on the Amiga than my Mac!

I have since found out how to access printer via OWB by putting in the IP address of the printer, and can now directly scan and save images on my Amiga.

So I now have a modern printer and fully functioning scanner with no other software required!

Oh happy days, who needs Windows or Mac OSX?

same here with my SAM and an officejet. install the driver, edit one file, job done. works great, color, the lot; and, via OWB, a fully working scanner and fax machine as well.

i'd still like to see a modern variant of turboprint, but this works nearly just as well.

glad to see it worked out for you.

People are excited about being able to print from OS4 now?

Talk about lowering the bar...

nah. but some of us are finding the driver compatibility a bit sparse with regards to modern printers. no issues with anything postscript or PCL based, and some support for DOT4 printers, but printers from HP and/or epson with host-side page-description are a problem. based on what we heard from amiwest, the developers are looking to 'future proof' the printing system by adopting something from the free software world -- such as haiku did with gutenprint -- to ensure that we don't fall behind in printer driver support.

turboprint still works great -- well, at least on my system -- but new printers from the past couple of years aren't fully supported since it's been EOL'd. the AROS community is even worse off, based on my usage of icaros; i know morphOS includes turboprint as their printing architecture. how do they handle the problem of supporting new printers? do they have someone who works on creating new turboprint drivers?

it's a problem you'll find with any of the amiga platforms: the printing world is just moving faster than we can keep up with. for now nearly all of the printers that i would purchase are supported by the built-in drivers or contributions on os4depot.

what i'd really like to see is support for higher-end printers and imagesetters coupled with pagestream5 finally finished. oh, and a new arteffect while we're at it. but, um, that seems rather unlikely.

And the exitement goes on: I'm printing with the same driver and setup from my OS3.9 machine and from my MorphOS2.7 system to the same printer - great, isn't it?
