Unhappy New member needs Help

Hi
I have been using the Amiga since my first A1000, way back in 1986 but this is the first time I have gone online. Its all a bit confusing....

I am wondering if anyone out there can tell me where I can purchase a new internal IDE DVD burner for my Amiga. As one of my Liteon burners has packed up. I have just finally written (after all these years) my own DVD burning software in 68k (it was easier than I thought) but now I can't finish writing the gui for it until I can find a new burner to finish it off. Also can anyone explain how I can release this software to the Amiga Community for free as I think it would be appreciated by Amiga Users everywhere.

(I don't even know if I am typing this question in the right place !!!)

Anybody Help Please.....

Hi Franko

Im pretty sure any standard IDE writer should do the job just fine and shouldnt set you back more than 20 quid or so. Maybe someone else can confirm this ?

With regards to releasing the software, you could always upload it to Aminet:

http://aminet.net/

And you could of course post a "news release" here on Amiga.org too.

You may also want to consider making your program open source in case you not longer have the time to continue it or someone wants to port it to OS4.

Also, its nice you are offering for free, much appreciated by those that will use it Im sure

Taj

Hi Tajmaster

Thank's for your reply. I have purchased and had to return a couple of drives by LightOn and Samsung. Neither would work properly the Hard Disk light on my Amiga would stay on when using these drives and lock up access to the HD. The drives I am currently using are LightOn LH-20A models and both worked fine until one of them wore out. I am quite willing to give away the source code for my burner progs which are written in standard 68k using devpac (writing in 060 didn't have any speed increase). The progs when compiled are about 4k long and will burn any iso file onto any type of DVD media including Dual Layer, but I really need to find another DVD burner to do some final checking of the progs before I release them.

Im pretty sure you need IDEFix installing to stop that light/HD access thing. I remember needing that on my A1200 to install the CD drive on a 4 way IDE splitter.
Maybe one of the other members can verify this?

Hi Tajmaster

I am using the Elbox FastATA/MKIII A1200 card & FastATA'99 software (last update ever released). The problem seems to be with all the new IDE drives that are on sale.

SCSIUTIL shows my current drives to be "ANSI Approved - SCSI-2"

Whereas on any new drive's I have tried SCSIUtil Show these as "ANSI Approved - ?3 undefined format 03"

I can only assume that this means these drives are using SCSI-3 and that the software for interfacing with the board can only handle SCSI-2.

The Amiga I am using is A 1200/ Blizzard 060/PPC 60Mhz/240Mhz /256Mb Ram/FastATA MKIII/Subway USB/1TB Total HDs/.

There must be someone out there who has purchased a new dvd burner recently for an A1200 setup, or am I just the last of a kind who stubbornly vows never to use a PC...

Cheers
Franko

I take it you are setting the devices to master/slave as appropriate? Im pretty sure cable select doesnt work on Amiga's.
Also, are the devices connected on the same channel or are you using them on seperate channels? (in which case both should be set to master)

There nothing wrong with using a PC but this isnt exactly the sort of place you get people who agree with that lol

Cmon guys anyone got any suggestions Franko can use?

Franko, if you dont get anywhere here you could also try posting on the Amibay forum and also EAB

Hi Tajmaster

All the settings on the interface are set up correctly. ie: Port 1 has 1 500gb HD as Master and 1 500gb HD as a Slave/ Port 2 has 1 DVD Drive as Master and 1 DVD Drive as a Slave.

This setup has always worked fine, it just seems to be newer IDE drives are using SCSI-3 protocols and the FASTAta MKIII can only understand SCSI-2.

Im not putting PC's down, I just prefer the Amiga OS system.

I'll give Amibay a try and see if anyone there can point me in the right direction.

The burner progs I have written run much faster on OS3.5/9 than the PPC prog AmiDVD which I run on OS4.0

I think I'll put these progs together (including the source code) and upload them On Aminet or Amiga.org for other's to use as they stand now, as this will allow anyone with even a low spec amiga to burn DVD's quite easily, and if you have two DVD burners (like I used to !) duplicate disks directly without have to make and ISO file.
