Anyone know how to get a large SCSI drive
mounted ( 47 gig ) ??
I bought a Seagate 47 gig SCSI drive for a
back-up drive. My problem is that HDTools
won't partition it. Says this drive not supported.
I've seen posts here (although I didn't read them)
about large drives. Now I'm wishing I had read them.
How do I get it partitioned and formatted ??
What software will do this??

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

At least Phase5/DCE accelerators with SCSI come with SCSIConfig tool that is supposed to be used instead of HDToolBox.

This SCSIConfig tool handles arbitrary size hard disks.

This SCSIConfig is supplied on a Amiga floppy, and it also contains >4gig patches for original AmigaOS 3.1 FastFileSystem (in case you don't have AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 fastfilesystem, SFS or PFS).

SCSI Tools V.2.4 MK II/1230/Fastlane
Blizzard SCSI IV System Disk
Cyberstorm PPC/Blizzard PPC SCSI Disk

Note that these are NOT likely to work on other SCSI controllers! (They might, if the device driver support TD64, however)

Anyhow, once the disk is initialized and partitions are set up, you save the changes and reboot.

Now you need to quickformat the newly created partitions. Use Workench System/Format or Format command in cli: Format DRIVE XDH0: Name VolumeName QUICK

Now the new partitions are ready for use. (I don't get into installing AmigaOS here, since this can much depend on the host controller driver issues and such).


You didn't specify the SCSI Host controller type. This information would be useful.

My system is .....

A3000 / OS 3.9
WarpEngine 040 / 40mhz

I use the WarpSCSI for my internal drive ( a 1 gig )
I was planning to install this 47 gig drive in my
external drive box. I don't turn on the external box
all the time, only when I need to access a CD Rom
or something on the external drive.
This drive is a Seagate 47 gig 5 1/4 in.
I think the voluum (47 gigs) is the problem.
I'm sure other people have solved this problem,
I guess I just wasn't paying attention :-(
Is there anything on Aminet that will work ??

under 3.9 os it should work but HD tool box sucks! I have used a program called RD prep and you should be able to get it off of Aminet.

Have you set up a RDB on this hard drive?
If not; this is what RD prep does best. If you have never set up hard drives before be sure to read all instructions. RD prep is not exactly for the beginner but if you study it ,you will be fine! RD also partitions Hard drives and formats also. Don't format with it use the format tool in workbench.

You, say that this is a new 47 gig ? How many pins 50pin,68pin or 80pin ? What type SCSI 2,3 ultra wide ? If it is a ultra wide (newer type) you will have to move a jumper on the drive. I don't know about the warp engine?What type of SCSI? I do know that the 3000 has SCSI 2 built in and will work with a ultra wide but you need a adapter for the drive.

original Amiga software just didn't need at that time to address a large HD ... , but Aminet has a program that will help.... Amiga the original went up to 3.5 GB .5GB for OS,etc..
BTW ever notice the Amiga with a toaster they have very large HD , the toaster software allows an infinite amount(s)..for HD.

I'll check this 'RD Prep' out.

The drive is a Seagate ST 446452W.
Its a 68 pin, with 68 to 50 pin adaptor
NOT included with drive.
( its a Brick ;-)
Its a 5 1/4 in. double height drive .
I'm using an old PC MiniTower case cut down
to just the drive bays for an external drive case.
works great with my A3k. So if you don't have
an external case with lots of room in it this drive
isn't for you. If you're interested, I'll post the site
where I bought it.

OK.... yes I have that info, but what does it mean
to me?? I am assuming that I can use the SCSI
ultra wide drive with the 68 to 50 pin adaptor.
If you can't do that then whats the point of the
adaptor.
The problem here as I see it is 'HDTools' not
being able to see the drive for what it is, a 47 gig.

You have a jumper on that hard drive that must be jumped! Instead of me trying to tell you which jumper to set and being wrong. Surplus Computers has a web site goto it and leave a email for tech services. Give them all info models and such on your hard drive and tell them you just purchased it. You need to know what type scsi you have ie. SCSI 2 ect. :also tell them you are using a 68/50 pin adapter. They will email you back ASAP. I know because I bought a Seagate Barracuda ,SCSI. ultra Wide, 80pin hard drive. I had to do the same thing to get it to work and I belive the jumper is called the force signal;not positive!

I'm working on getting you that RD prep program!

useing SCSI, hmmm, OS3.9 should see it. Install from hdtools, no boot, maybe 2 partitions, it should see it.

I've had a terrible time with the HDtoolbox that came with OS3.9, so I reinstalled the one from OS2.1 and got better results.

Forgive a dumb question: You did start with CHANGE DRIVE TYPE/DEFINE NEW DRIVE TYPE/READ DRIVE INFO didn't you?

Yes .. I did all those things ...
I have OS 2.04...2.1 ..3.1 and 3.9.
All say the same thing ...
"This drive not supported"

I beleave the problem is its a 68 pin UW SCSI.
I'm going to contact 'SurplusComputers' as
suggested. The 'jumper' sounds like the right
fix.
