Default AmigaOne Slashdotted

Slashdot have an article about Mac On Linux running on the AmigaOne. Once again however Amiga's come back has been booed down by the Slashdot masses.

This kind of behaviour is standard for Slashdot. IMO tt has actually little to do with the Amiga per se. The same happened with BeOS stories when Be Inc still was alive and kicking. The people shouting at Slashdot in replies isn't the silent majority which actually likes to read about Amiga. The more shouting is more an indicator of that many (for whatever reason) see Amiga as a potential competitor.

IMO it is best to either ignore the comments or write clarifications or your own opinions in reply. :-)

Let's be a little objective here.

What exactly was the Slashdot article meant to tell us? That MacOnLinux runs on a machine running LinuxPPC? :-o

Big Deal!!! It's like saying the GIMP runs on Linux or that Microsoft Office XP runs OK on a computer running WindowsXP. Geez.

MacOnLinux was written to run on LinuxPPC. It would be news if it did not run.

While I can see that any scrap of AmigaOne related "news" might be of interest to the starved Amiga crowd, IMO posting this to Slashdot got exactly the reaction it deserved.

The Slashdot people seems to think that noone has ever emulated a Mac before and that it would be impossible.
What's so strange about it? Shapeshifter used the same approach as MOL as far as I know (same CPU, provide emulation for the stuff that doesn't exist).
Seems like most people doesn't even know that the newer MacOS versions is ROM-less.
I personally think this is great stuff, because it shows that the A1 is a machine that can do more than just run AmigaOS. Maybe a few Linux-only nerds will buy the A1 and spread the word.

With an Amithlon-like approach it could be a success.

Yeah, it was sort of like "Let's point out the obvious". Which was odd as very few on Slashdot seemed to notice that . They kept going on and on about a version of Mac OS that was running on non-Mac hardware.
It seems that most MoL users run a Linux PPC distro on actual Mac hardware...

Hi Y'all,

Well no matter how Slashdot and others react I thinks it good news.

Yes, MOL was designed to work with LinuxPPC, but what they fail to realise is that LinuxPPC wasn't originally made to run on the A1.
It's taken a ####load of work from the first developer ppl to get to this stage and I applaud you all (and myself when I get mine :-D )

Cheers,

Graham C

Thank you :-D
I've been through some weeks with very little sleep indeed ;-)
But the end-result was definitely worth it :-D

Now I can concentrate a little on getting my homepage back up and running - somehow that did not seem as important as other things 8-)

Cheers

I've just finished reading 95% of the thread on Slashdot, and I have to disagree with this quote. There is a lot of positive press for the Amiga in there, although there are a few Amiga fanatics who really should think before they write.

Kudos should go out to whoever Mike Bouma is, as well as to the others who have been defending the Amiga properly against the few nay-sayers out there.

There's also the fact that many comments revolve around Mac running on Linux, not Mac running on Linux running on AmigaOne. Makes sense since most regulars on Slashdot seem to be Linux users.

Maybe it's time that more Amigans get accounts on Slashdot. And maybe it's time that more Amiga-related news gets posted there as well. Amiga.org is excellent for Amiga users. Mac and "PC" users won't come here to view our news if they never heard of the Amiga. How far is word-of-mouth going to get if it's isolated strictly to Amiga sites?

Maybe it would be a good idea to mention each Executive Update on Slashdot. It might swamp Amiga.com, but at least it would spread the word faster than it currently does. Even nay-sayers will go check it out.

MikeB, your right... I saw an old friend of mine the other day and we got talking about Amigas and I was blown away that he knew about the A1, he'd read it on slashdot.

My point is that he was well interested and I thought he would have laughed. He like u said is one of silent ones that wouldn't spend time getting into slagging matches on slashdot or similar sites...

Even though I use a Windows most of the time, I still prefer using AmIRC when I'm on dalnet. I just need to break down and buy a keyboard & mouse adapter for my Amiga so it'll work better with my switcher.
