Default OS4 Classic FAQ

For those of us who are awaiting our packages, and wish to prep our systems in advance.

Is there an official FAQ somewhere?

If not,

1 - Minimum / recommended HD space ?
2 - Minimum / recommended RAM ?
3 - Minimum (physical) ROM requirement ?

Feel free to answer / add questions.

Cheers

Definately a good idea. I installed OS4 on my A1200 today and slected my graphics card as Voodoo PCI. However I cannot access this card and under show cofig no pci cards are listed. There is however an entry for the mediator board so I'm a bit stuck.

In answer to your question hard rive capacity should not be an issue.I've got 256MB RAM installed and even running on AGA the system is fast. I hope this graphics problem can be resolved.

Hi lurkist,

AmigaOS 4.0 Classic will require at least 64 MB of memory (more is recommended) and at least 200 MB of free hard disk space, as well as a supported PowerPC accelerator (CyberstormPPC or BlizzardPPC).
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that 3.0 ROMS will be ok :-)

AFAIK there is a rom image included with OS4 this it reads off the HDD, so the rom set is not important

Mine arrived today :-D (Thanks Matthew, well packaged) along with my copy of "On the edge".
Nice box... Nice new manual, no creases, smells nice, mmmmmm .... boot floppy included (watch and learn H&P), sealed paper CD case - seems a shame to open it but must... perfect, nicely printed, CD with flawless bottom face.

I've been back in the Amiga scene for a few years now (around 2001), and this is the first time I've had a brand-new operating system to play with. Am looking forward to sharing the learning curve with everyone else, instead of playing catchup.
Unfortunately, I have around 2 weeks worth of work to do by next Wednesday, and then am moving house on Saturday, so won't have time to install it for a while yet.

I've managed to trace where I read "It will boot from 3.0 ROM's". It was here

But I've just noticed how old that great report is at the bottom of the page

@ Boot_WB

Congratulations

Enter the setup menu of your CyberstormPPC / BlizzardPPC (by holding the Escape key while powering up your Amiga) and make sure that the MapROM options is set to "OFF", and that your RAM settings are set to "70ns".
Well I've changed my Ram from 60 to 70 and in System I already have "No MapRom".

I know they aren't mentioned in the Quickstart Guide, but does anyone think I should change any of these in 'System' for optimum performance of my CSPPC:-

SuperScalar Off
BranchCache OFF
Writebuffer Off

In 'CDFS' I have:-

No CDFS HD RDB Scan

Cache sets 40

Cache set blocks 4

SuperScalar Off
BranchCache OFF
Writebuffer Off

these are for the 68060

About the 70 ns thing, try with 60 ns also (just for testing). This setting is not mandatory (even if suggested by the betatesters/developer). Theyy depends on how your SIMMs behaves onto your card.

Oh ok thanks Framiga,

I think it a good idea to start by making a *copy* of your OS4 BootFloppy and using that :-) (Unless you are going to use the "Start installation from OS3.x" icon of course)
