Default Snapshot Question

WB 3.1 has 3 Snapshot choices.....

Icons ... Snapshot
Window ... Snapshot ... Window
Window ... Snapshot ... All

Assume I am an idiot (not too far off) - What is the difference between each of these?

Using a program could they be combined into one Snapshot command that did all the functions of each or is it important that there be 3 distinct choices?

Thank you for your consideration.

I think it is quite likely that there is only a single Snapshot command - a choice from the menus will execute that command with different parameters. Play with them, and find out what they do. You might find Unsnapshot to be useful as well...

Done!

Icons ... Snapshot

This saves the positions of all the currently selected icons.

Window ... Snapshot ... Window

This saves the position and size of the selected window, as well as the 'Show' and 'View By' settings.

Window ... Snapshot ... All

This saves the position and other settings of all the icons in the selected window, as well as the position and size of the window.

Thanks for the clarification!

Now another related question -

Since the locations of the icons and such seem to be stored on the each individual media when you 'snapshot' it how do I store any changes to where my CD-ROM icon appears on my WB?

Balls in your court.

Create a drawer with the same icon as your CD drive. Put it where you want it on the Workbench and snapshot it. Then copy this to envarc:sys/dev_cd0.info or whatever the exact filename is (from memory so location and filename might not be quite right :-) )

As they said it saves info about a given directory/window. This is saved between reboots so if you go to a directory, do Show All, arange the icons as you want, and do Snapshot, the next time you power up and go to that directory the window will look the same.

So far it doesnt seem to work on the top level very well, whether or not WB is Backdropped. It somewhat records the icons positions and seems to take the Show All there and apply it globally, but the icons do still move around somewhat after reboots. Not quite as randomly though.

PS this all works better without flicker fixers, so if you want to send me your board...
