Default Nice workbench on vanilla A1200

hello

I am about to install a new HDD on a vanilla A1200. I would like to have a nice-looking and comfortable Workbench on it. Which tools would you suggest, to improve the workbench without causing too much overhead to the little 020?

regards
Luca

Magic Workbench is what I recommend :-)

Or ClassicWB

Hello!

I am resurrecting this thread, to ask about NewIcons.
MagicWB is very nice but I like more NewIcons, because of the DefIcons system.
I wonder why nobody suggested NewIcons to me. Maybe it's too resource consuming for a vanilla 1200?

I have a related quesition. Which the relationship between NewIcons and the icons of OS 3.5/3.9?
I think they are similar but not the same. Is there some tool allowing to use 3.5/3.9 icons
on a 3.0/3.1 (or below) system??

regards
Luca

Newicons is not related to 3.5/3.9 colouricons. (you're right - similar but not the same)

You can't see 3.5/3.9 icons on 3.0/3.1, but you can convert them to Newicon format with ConvertColorIcon (on Aminet). You still need 3.1 ROM and icon.library 44+ to create the library used by ConvertColorIcon. Once the library is created, you can use ConvertColorIcon with 3.0 ROM. (or I could just give you the library and you can avoid all that fuss ;-))

If you don't want to use Newicons, you can still have 16 colour icons in WB 3.0/3.1 - if you use an editor like Iconian and save as icon (not as Newicon) and have a palette locker like FullPalette or LoadCMAP.

Some people have said that you can use 3.5/3.9 icons if you have 3.1 ROM and copy the 3.5/3.9 icon.library, workbench.library, setpatch and update for use in WB 3.1. I don't know how stable your Workbench would be if you did that.

Newicons will be very sluggish on a 020. I would not run NI on anything without a graphics board.

But I think you can get Deficons from Aminet if I am not wrong.

I'd get an '030 board with FastMem if I were you, MagicWB icons can be 4k each and do speed up with an accelerator. They are nice looking even on a 3-Bit screen (8 colours) so would be ideal for a low end system.

FullPalette is an essential if you don't want other programs messing with your colours.

:-D

What? Newicons aren't sluggish on my 020 (without graphics board).

You can also speed it up a bit with SystemPatch.

hello,

I am still undecided between MagicWB and NewIcons...
But I definetly would like to have Deficons (or something similar). So, I searched aminet and find a Deficon package (v. 44) which requires OS3.5 (which I found strange because I thought that OS3.5 already had it...OS3.9 has deficons).
No good for me (remember I am dealing with a vanilla 1200 with kickstart 3.0 and wb 3.1). So, is it possible in this case to use Deficons without NewIcons?

regards
Luca
