Default AROS. How good it is?

Do you recommend AROS on x86?

What are the pros and cons? Which version do you recommend? i386 native or linux/bsd hosted, why?

Can you compare it to UAE/amikit, UAE/OS3.9, AmigaXL and AmigaNG.

bla, bla, bla

Thanks. I will visit. By the way, I want to hear critics from amiga.org users.

It's hard to compare to what you listed as it doesn't run 68K software. Though it is source compatable, meaning if you have the source it should compile and run on AROS.
I haven't got it to work on my A7n8x PC, but I did have it running on an old Compaq E500. There is also a Windows hosted version. I'd have to say go native if it runs on your hardware. I haven't tried it since it got networking. I'd like to try out the IRC client.
I don't think it has much software-wise yet to make it common use for most people, but it did get one or two commercial releases lately. Namely Hollywood.

I never had major problems running AROS on my PCs. I was always bored with it quite quickly, however I think that was because I was using the liveCDs which limits what you can do to a large extent.

Ok. As I understood, it can only be a fun stuff due to software incompatability. I assumed, i can run 68k workbench software on it but you said it is not possible :-(

Therefore I am downloading Aros Max Live CD Stable (Native), just to see what we have.

Are there any possibility to have backward software compatability in future? Do you have any idea?

No, not directly. There needs to be something like:

Bounty #7: UAE integration (basic/initial)

However, this is easier said than done... The problem here is that the emulated apps are "disconnected" from rest of the system. Also, such construct would require owning legal AmigaOS (or AROS m68k build would need to improve to fully compatible level so it could be used for the emulated m68k Kickstart ROM etc).

For the ROMs, there are two beginning bounties, here and here.

This project is probably the only way classic Amiga owners are going to be able to update their ROMS ever again.

@dammy

BTW, Remus should prove very useful when developing the AROS Kickstart ROM. Each module could be replaced one by one as the thing is progressing. At first only the simplest modules would be replaced, but eventually everything would be AROS.
