Default reccuring checksum errors on IDE HD

Hello all, I have another odd problem. I periodically get checksum errors on two HD partitions (8.5 GB IDE HD under OS 3.9) If I back up the partitions and reformat them, then copy the data back, shouldn't that get rid of the checksum errors? I try this, it works for a while, then I get the errors again. I know one of the checksum errors came after turning off my miggy when I thought disk I/O was done, but wasn't (#$%$@!! Vista Pro #$@@!!) Could I be copying the errors when I back up my data. I really can't just wipe out everything, all my pics, WHDLoad games, etc. Any help would be great...

No, the checksum errors won't follow the files to and from your backup.

Some questions. What file system are you using? What MaxTransfer value? What hardware is the drive running on?

Hello,
Well, I don't know the MaxTransfer value, I just leave it alone...whatever is default for OS 3.9, I guess. I am using FFS International with Directory Cache on. Funny, my WB partition and Work on the same HD have never had problems, nor my SCSI devices.... OK, my system: A1200 Power Tower,OS 3.9 w/ BB2, DCE '060/50 MHz w/ SCSI module, 128 MB Fast RAM total, OS 3.9 w/ Boing Bag 2, 8.5 GB HD (Maxtor, I believe), SCSI 2.0 GB HD, DCTV, USR 56K modem, SCSI scanner....
Some nasty hacks, e.g. MCP, ToolsDaemon, but have used for years with no probs. , could my HD be wearing out?
Marc :-?

You should check MaxTransfer.

And you should by all means avoid DirectoryCache. It is for floppy disks only and it is buggy like hell. This could well cause your problems. FFS INTL (DOS\3) is the way to go if you want to stay with FFS. However, changing to SFS or PFS3 might be a good idea, too.

Bye,
Thomas

Yeah, I once formatted a new disk carelessly and wondered, why it was so slow and every other boot attempt failed with errors. Of course I had used FFS-DC and not even noticed it. And naturally the errors were gone as I reformatted with plain FFS.
