Hello everyone,
I was putting my Amiga's back together yesterday. They have been apart for almost a year now and I wanted to get them running again. While two of the three run fine, one of my A3000s doesn't work properly. When I turn the computer on, the HD light comes on but nothing happens. If I remove the HD, eventually the 3.1 request comes on (insert floppy disc). However if I put a floppy in the floppy drive, nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas? I will be taking it apart again to check connections. I have the latest chips in it (Super Buster rev11, Ramsey 7 DMAC 4, WD rev8 SCSI). I have 8 megs of Fast and 2 of ChipRAM. I have pulled the HD to use in my other 3000 and it worked fine. When I had this machine totally apart, I pulled the SCSI chip and reinserted it in the socket to make sure it worked as I was getting intermittent HD quirks. I also pulled the ROM tower and reinserted it. I'm hoping someone had an idea as I really don't want to start pulling chips from one 3000 and putting them in the other. Thanks for the help in advance. |

Hi
Nothing else is connected to the SCSI-bus ? Have you waited long enough for a possible timeout (60 seconds I think) ? Is the SCSI-cable intact and correct terminated ? Maybe the SCSI-Id of the controller in the A3000 and the one of the HD are identically ? Try to jumper another Id for the HD. > However if I put a floppy in the floppy drive, nothing happens. Really nothing ? Or does the drive starts to read, but stops immediately without effort ? Noster

For the SCSI try using setbatt to set the ID of the controller. IIRC it defaults to 0 or something when the battery is flat, which could conflict.
With the FDD, check the seating of cables, the CIAs etc etc. Maybe try another FDD too?

With the floppy drive, nothing happens and I mean nothing. It doesn't seem to spin up or anything. Admittedly I have not used the set batt utility but I ran the computer without a battery for a little while and there wasn't any problems. My other machine had the battery taken out of it and I didn't run set batt yet it runs fine so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
There is nothing else attahced to the SCSI bus except for the one hard drive. I don't think there is anyproblem with the ID numbers as nothing moves. The HD doesn't spin up at all. I shall have to go back into the machine to see if anything isn't connected properly. I will do that later. |

Does that machine have an A3640 accelerator? Certain combinations of buster/ramsey and the A3640 will cause a nonfunctional SCSI controller. I've personally experienced this as a "permanently lit" hard drive led. Swapping the A3640 with one in another 3000 resulted in both of them working fine.

Check termination. Also check that floppy is plugged in and power hooked up properly.

It is odd that the floppy drive does nothing.
Sounds almost like there is no +12V coming from the power supply. You can easily check this with a multimeter. The motherboard only requires +5V for almost everything which is why you can see the insert disk screen. Aside from that, check obvious things like cables, the drive itself, etc. |
