Default OCS Vs ECS

Will OCS games run on an ECS machine?

They should work unless they are programmed badly and do things such as writing to undefined OCS registers/bits that now have a meaning in ECS and generally assuming things (such as bitplanes) to be in a certain place at all times.

Most games have more trouble with Kickstart 2.x than with the chipsets. Sometimes a kickstart switcher or degrader program can help.

In short, properly written programs should work fine, but it is trial and error I'm afraid, especially for games that don't run from Workbench.

A lot of the older Amiga games will not run on an ECS Amiga because of the 1 meg of Chip ram. These games expect to find only 512K of Chip memory and Fast memory right after that 512K of Chip ram. This is one of the main reasons why the older, cooler games will not work. If you have an Amiga 500, you can turn off the second 512K of Chip ram. Then the older games will work just fine. I did this on my Amiga 500 Tower of Power. I hooked up a switch so that I can turn the extra Chip memory on or off. If you want a really nice, high quality Vintage Amiga Game Machine then get yourself an Amiga 2000 computer. Make sure that it only has 512K of Chip ram (revision 4.X motherboard) and Kickstart / Workbench 1.2 or 1.3.
