Default Amiga-based software presented at Nordental 2009

Nordental is the largest convention about dentistry in Norway, with about 4000 professional visitors from both private and public healthcare. Ferrule Media was present demonstrating their series of products – Dental Kanal and Dental Info.

Dental Kanal is an informationchannel about dentistry hosted by a Sam 440EP 667mhz running os4.1. The software is developed using the amazing Hollywood/Designer-software. With the help of Andreas Falkenhahn of Airsoft Softwair we have been able to produce a commercial infochannel running smoothly even on a low-specced SAM. This is possible by using hardware accelerated crossfade-effects.

Dental Info v.3.5 is a program that helps the dentist in the process of informing patients about treatment. Dental Info has been developed using Hollywood / Designer (OS4.1) and compiled to support Windows-hosted machines.

Both products gathered a lot of interest from the visitors – we have added a few photos from the fair showing the Ferrule Media-crew and the computer-setup.

Ferrule Media would like to use this opportunity to thank for the support from both Hyperion Entertainment CVBA and Acube Systems SRL!

Most importantly we would like to thank Andreas Falkenhahn of Airsoft Softwair. Without his talent and amazing support it would not have been possible to develop Dental Kanal and Dental Info. His software is by far the most impressive tools I have ever used on Amigas.

Best regards

Interesting...

It's good to see Amiga(ish) stuff out there in the real world.

Cheers,

Mike.

I almost had to do a double-take when I saw this news item, as it looked very spammy to begin with. Only the poster's rep saved it from being trashed as spam.

What the f...? It's not April 1st is it?

I wonder what the reason was behind choosing something as obscure as the OS 4.1/SAM440 based combo over any Linux/Windows based system. From an Amiga enthusiasts point of view it is very, very cool&nice, but I cannot get the economical puzzle to work out.

Nevertheless, godt jobba!

Indeed, rather strange choice for hardware, but whatever... the big issue now is that I'll have to visit all dentist offices here till I find one that is Amiga powered!

Btw - I presume I'm not the only one who find it utterly cool to see dentists investing in Amiga, again!

hi there

Our customers does not care about what machine is hosting the infochannel - they just want a solution that is stable and easy to use

The Sam is very easy to set up as an infochannel - simply copy the executable to the wbstartup-drawer and the presentation starts once the OS is loaded.

The system is also very easy to install for the user.. No internet-connection is needed. Simply connect tge machine to a flatscreen and to the power-suply. The user can turn the infochannel on / off using the power-button. No mouse / keyboard is connected ofcourse - so the machine is simply sold under the trademark "Dental Kanal".

The most important part is ofcourse that the fact that it is running on amigas makes it fun to work with. Being able to comunicate directly with the hardware-supplyers and OS-makers has been nice. We are also lucky to work closely with Andreas Falkenhahn - he has been superb!

If anyone's unaware of the Amiga-dentist connection, read this, down on page 3-4 or so

Still - I absolutely appreciate the easyness of the classicWB/AmigaOS, haven't tried OS4.1 myself yet so cannot comment about that - I presume it is not considerably heavier.

Is there a USB port available? So next time I go to the dentist I can bring a USB stick and a USB keypad/joystick to play Giana Sisters in the waiting time.

Amiga's multimedia capabilities made information kiosks; it was another niche Commodore failed to exploit.

Just a question; what is the market for this machine? I mean who are the intended clients? and is there any information about sales at the moment?

I am asking just to see how such niche markets work out

As from an Amiga perspective - it is really cool to see Dentists investing in Amiga again - who knows, maybe the circle will start again

I just want to congratulate you on a job well done. Glad to see that you've used the Amiga in your venture. Keep it up!

Wish you best of luck with your business!

PS: The next time I'm visiting the dentist, I'll ask about your system. Informing the patients about the procedure and treatment is very important, and your package delivers in this respect. It's not easy to ask questions about the treatment when the dentist is drilling and poking.

Smile Re: Amiga-based software presented at Nordental 2009

My brother happens to be a dentist and I set up an A1200 with 8 meg ram card and a 40 gig hard drive to run a scala presentations on an 80 cm CRT in his waiting room. We wanted to use a touch screen, but we couldn't find anyone selling them at the time.

I taught him to use it, and he was inputting scans of photo's from a Umax scanner flat bed over squirrell PCMCIA scsi into his rolling presentations.. We used a prograbRT frame grabber via PCMCIA to grab video (small, B and W) as well. It was by far the cheapest way and most reliable way to do this at the time

It ran from about 2000 to about 2007, when he decided to take an extended leave from his profession.

He has recently set up a new surgery, and is looking around at the "digital signage" solutions out there eg Scala. But it costs a bomb, to install, and maintain. He's asked me if we can get scala MM400 to run on a 16:9 32" LCD. Not sure if we can, have looked at getting an indivision to do this but not sure how scala runs through it especially as scala hits the hardware pretty hard. We intend running it with an 68060 and 32 meg ram.

Not sure what it is with dentists and amiga

Hi there!

Well, Hollywood Designer and a SAM + OS4.1 would work perfectly for the job! We run our infochannel in 1366*768, 24 BIT. You should point your brother to our homepage - we would love to discuss about dentistry/infochannels with him

I used Scala earlier aswell, but it can not compete with Hollywood / Hollywood Designer Have you ever tried it ?
