Default A1000 HardDrive Question?

I've never done much with A1000 computers but I have one I acquired and thought I might mess around with it a little. What is the preferred method/hardware for connecting a Hard-Drive to the computer? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks,

Dan :-?

Back when my 1000 was my main machine, I used a Phoenix box to add a hard drive. This was a plug on the side box that gave the 1000 two ZorroII style slots. So I used a 2058 RAM card and a Trumpard to run a whopping 40MB hard drive. ;-) A DKB Kwikstart board and 2.x ROM let me autoboot from the HD.

There are plans on Aminet to build a single slot ZorroII adapter.

It's also possible to use an external HD from a 500... but since the expansion port is on the other side, the HD will ne on backwards, plus you'll have to put something under it to raise it up a bit. Probably block the mouse ports as well.

I wonder if there's an IDE solution... maybe something that fits under the CPU?

I think ICD made a 68000 socket IDE card. May have been a couple other similar items as well.

I looked at that and that won't work for me. The A1000 that I acquired has a Rejuvenator board and also a Derringer 030@50 card. The guy I got it from had Harddrive problems and ended up not using the computer. He had mounted it in a tower. I removed it from the tower and put it back into an original case.

You could use any one of a number of A500 sidecars on the A1000, you just have to turn them around and support the difference in height the A1000 has. A neater solution would be to get one of Individual Computers Clockport cards, stick that under the Derringer and then add a Subway USB card and boot off a USB stick or mass storage device. That should work and give you a pretty slick A1000.

Ahhhh ... you bought the "frankandthousend" from fastrob?! (dont remember his nick correctly)

The best hd-controller i have ever used with the a1000 is from FSE.
Its a modified (other firmware / BOIL3) kupke scsi-controller for the a1000.
with 68000 and 2 mb fastmem 1,1 mb/s and with 68030 it came up to 2mb/s.
it works rockstable ... (but my 105mb qantum died)

The hot Amiga setup that I ran in 1987 was to remove the internal floppy drive to make room for what I thought at the time was a monstrous "105mb" 3.5" hard drive connected to a DKB AdIDE controller with the ShuffleBoard add-on that would allow booting from the first external floppy drive for games that could not be installed to a hard drive. I had also installed a Spirit Insider board with either 1.5mb, or 2mb of Fast RAM on it and a DKB KwikStart ROM switcher with 1.3 & 2.04 installed for a while.

I still have that first Amiga A1000 from those days, but for one reason or another it was taken apart years ago and I have used parts of it elsewhere and have never set it up the same again. Ahhh, the good old days.

For internal hard drives on the A1000 the AdIDE is a good choice if you can find one.
