Default Viper 030/28 RTC 8 mb issues

finally got back from the hospital today to plug in my viper 030/28 8mb into my a1200 however i am running into some technical problems. with the jumpers set to 8mb the power light starts to flash, then i get a red screen and the power light start to flash brighter and faster until the screen resets in a flurry of white dots. If i set the jumpers to a different position the machine boots with no fast ram though, it recognises the 030 and FPU and realtime clock. could this be due to faulty ram? cheers guys!

update:

managed to get the 8mb ram recognised yay! now for another question, is there a patch anywhere which will allow me to use the pcmcia port with the viper? i seem to remember there was one but i could be mistaken.

i've had a little look, and from what i can see, it seems that the Viper is PCMCIA friendly :-)

I think you need to check the solder joints on the 030 processor and memory slot.

A 030 processor heats a lot (not like a 040, of course), and after some years of heating-colding cycles some pin can develop a bad contact. Specially if it is a PGA unit. PLCC chips don't suffer this issue too often.

Another good candidate are the pins of the accelerator itself. Just carefully pry 'em to make better contact with the edge connector of the 1200.

@ ami_junki:

What did you have to do to get the 8mb ram recognised? Was it a bent pin or cold solder? Or incorrect jumper settings?

thanks I will have a look at the pins, I cleaned the board connector and it seemed like the board recognised the fast ram after that. i think it might be down to a flaky motherboard, it might be too old.

I always clean my expansion slots with PCB cleaner before wacking on an accelerator card.

Externe Erweiterungen/PCMCIA-Karten/PCMCIA-HD
Wenn Sie das Turbosystem mit mehr als 4MB verwenden, so
können z.B. PCMCIA-Karten/Erweiterungen nicht betrieben werden,
da sich die Speicheradressen überschneiden. Abstürze sind die Folge!

In plain English: it's not PCMCIA friendly if 8 MB is used.
