The overall speed gain compared to the 68000 was below 10% in practice, so it did not make much sense to upgrade the 68000 CPU with the 68010, even though the two were pin-compatible.
The 68010 was not 100% software compatible with the 68000. The most problematic difference was the exception stack frame. Quote from Wikipedia. |

It can be done as a DIY project.
Simply buy a PLCC or even a DIL 68010, build a little board with a 68000 socket on the underside and route the disable_CPU pin to ground or to a switch (to provide fall-back) and route all other pins to the "new" 68010. Simple enough. But Krusher is right: it will enhances the CPU speed to 10%, nothing more, and will develop a lot of incompatibilities (specially in games).

I had a dual cpu board on my Amiga 500, with 68000 and 68010, but I don't remember why. Not for speed though. Ugh, those late '80's seem a long time ago.

EDIT - clip from whdload readme: "68010+ is recommended because some installs require the VBR for the 'quit by a key' feature" |

Hmm, something sinks in, I think I had the dual board for some weird demo or something that could only run with the 68010. Other then that, it's just not worth the problems.

Want to boost it?
Add some FAST RAM and you're in business! Adding more RAM to your system makes it gain a boost performance over 100% (guaranteed!). Don't know how to buy/ how to make one? Look at this thread! Or directly to the author's page: Linky link
