Default PC0: 720k floppy woes

Hi all -

Recently got back into the Amiga. I have a 2000 and am running WB3.1.

I recently got a CDROM to add to the system but in the proces my HD died.

I was waiting on my RAM for my accelerator and now I have it.

Here is the issue:

before my HD died I copied the PC0: over to the proper location and was able to read 720k format floppies formatted on my PC no problem. Now I copied the same PC0: over to the floppy WB 3.1 (copy) and it seems to be mounted etc. But I cant seem to read any PC floppys now. I put them in and just get DF0: ????? .

Am I missing something that may have been installed on my HD to access the floppys from PC? It seems straightforward to me. HELP

If it works you should have a PC0: Icon on the WB. Make sure you have CrossDOSfileSystem in L: and mfm.device in devs: and make sure the icon properties are correct.

What do you mean by this? And how would I go about checking this?

You don't just need the PC0 file (or mountlist entry) in Devs/DOSDrivers (or Storage/DOSDrivers), you also need CrossDOSFileSystem (in L) and mfm.device (in Devs). There may be other bits, it's a while since I've booted my A1200, but I will do so if you don't get this sorted out.

Edit: beaten to it, see above.

I did have CD in L: but I need to check the MFM.DEVICE . I bet thats the problem. The HD came with the system so I bet those were in place before I copied the PC0: over... All the tutorials leave out everything you need to check and just say 'copy out PC0: and go to town' .. thanks guys.

What disk would i find MFM.device on?

Workbench 3.x should have it. It might be in Storage (see my avatar).

OK I have everything where it should be. At least those three files. and it still wont read the disks. I know the disks are readable because I was just using them. I do not get a PC0: I just get nothing but the DF0: ???? Any other files I need to look for... man I wish my HD hadnt died. that made this stuff a real PITA.

Hi

>But I cant seem to read any PC floppys now. I put them in >and just get DF0: ????? .

The DF0: is the icon for the readable Amiga disk. You can check this by trying to format and it will format as an Amiga disk. There should be another icon for a disk that is a PC disk. If you have PC0: and its mounted what happens of you put an Amiga disk in do you get a PC0:NDOS icon that comes on and then disappears when it recognises the Amiga disk. Try putting PC0: and PC1: in the drawer. My PC1: is for a High Density Drive. You need to get CED or a text editor and have a look at what your PC0 actually has written in the mount file. It could have been edited in its lifetime as a High Density Drive. It should say mfm.device and refer to CrossDOSfilesystem in L. Unit number should be 0. ( zero ). The tools icon is a hot key thats a red herring. The unit number is key here as it could have been changed. PC0: could be mounted but not on DF0: Clear as mud.
