Default Commodore are back....

....kinda...

Found this link on a VW forum. Nice PC, but then again, it is just a 'nice PC' shame, OS4 couldn't be licenced for it, seems like something of a lost opportunity...

Also this article on the BBC website.

Why wouldn't OS4 be good to have on a new "Commodore PC", a few things..

Lack of support for Shader Hardware (yeah mesa/openGL doesn't cover this) and multiple GPUs..

Lack of support for SLI (See the above reason) hardware architecture..

Lack of support for PCI-Express..

Lack of support for same hard drive standards.

Lack of Support for Soundblaster X-FI Professional 24-bit audio standards

Lack of kernal support for Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad-Core processor QX6700: 2.66GHz 8MB Cache

That's four processor cores working together folks..

So why is it a disappointment that OS 4 is not on the box? It isn't to me, you'd have to disable 90% of the rocking hardware in it to run OS4 even ignoring the processor issue.

This machine is so much better hardware wise than ANY AmigaOne hardware model out there, you'd be comparing APPLES to ORANGES..

I love the Amiga folks, but the Amiga cannot compete with this box for gaming, software, OS or ANYTHING..

I wish someone would do OS 5 and support even 30 percent of the features listed in the hardware here..

I'd love to see an Amiga with 4 cpu cores, multiple GPUs.. Etc. The problem is that they haven't done anything like that since CLASSIC hardware.

Even if the Amiga was a GOOD OS why would you bother to buy OS4/AmigaOne. This Commodore PC probably can run all your classic Amiga software thru UAE faster than an AmigaOne ever could.

Does the AmigaOne even have support for DVD/RW?

You guys shouldn't bemoan that OS4 isn't there, you should be advocating for an OS 5 with modern features not substandard hardware, which isn't the original Amiga experience to begin with. The Amiga was all about hyper powered graphics, not just an OS..

If you can't advocate for OS/5 just buy one of these boxs, run UAE on it, and be very very happy..

I hate to read this, i don't really want to say it, but...

You are right, if there is any future for Amiga- it's about back to the drawingtables and start from scratch, hardware and software with future-vision and the best technology in mind. a lot to dream about, is it not?

AFAIR it was about OS and Hardware complementing each other in such a way that they were more than the sum of their parts.

OS4 is fine - a little underfeatured in certain areas, but I'll come the that in a sec.

The trouble with starting from scratch (particularly with hardware) is that it costs money. lots of. and we ay got nun!

the trouble OS4 has is that there isnt a lot of resource full stop. no one really has the time to produce USB or PCI drivers that manufacturers arent going to do. or even video codecs.

but yes, the hardware part of the platform needs starting again - a PCIE bus is a minimum requirement for desktop - but whos going to do that, given Eyetech's experiences ? I refer to Alan Redhouse's comments that it would have been considerably easier and cheaper and faster in hindsight to give all the interested parties £500 each.
I note that there are a few PPC-PCIE bridges available, and several manufacturers of Industrial PPC solutions (PrPMC mezzanine daughter card systems for instance) the trouble is the cost and its even worse when one tries to work out recouping those costs in sales. (note: in my forays and googlings, I havent seen an ATX/ITX PPC motherboard yet)

oh - and yes, I believe the OS has support for DVD/RW. unless you just mean the AmigaOne in anyform, in which case I ask 'does Debian (or any other PPC build) have DVD/RW support ?'

I always wondered why people made those "high end" PCs anyways. They're all made from components you can buy yourself for less than the total price of the package. Last time I checked, I could build myself a computer with the exact same specs as the latest Alienware, for roughly 3/4 of the price, without even looking for bargains.

Commodore is not really a nice name not as nice as Amiga.

Sounds old, Looks old, maybe it was best suited to a model of a car
:-D

On the other hand I think an Amiga named high spec PC would do much better... along with a type of AmigaOS to play with but this will probably never happen.

oh well back to fondling Efika

Er...is there an echo in here?

Okay, so i revise my initial post, it'd be nice if OS5 was built with an aim to run on similar hardware, and make use of all its features...

I suppose...? I agreed with your statement; this is a standard PC, nothing special at all, don't see what all the fuzz is about (except for the brand)

Oh, be careful, you might ignite the "OS4/5 should be ported to x86" threads again ;-)
