FS-UAE 2.0 for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD

I am pleased to announce version 2.0 of FS-UAE, the multi-platform Amiga emulator for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and FreeBSD! FS-UAE 2.0 can be downloaded here.

Notable changes since version 1.2 include:
  • No need to edit config files any more! A user-friendly configuration frontend, FS-UAE Launcher, is included.
  • Emulation core updated to WinUAE2.4.2beta1.
  • Many bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • Support OpenGL shaders for post-processing special effects.
  • Added theming infrastructure. Downloadable themes are available.
  • GUI translation for several languages (English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, and Serbian).
  • Added keyboard emulation for CD32 gamepad.
  • Support for hard drive images > 4GB.
  • JIT compilation is now available on some platforms.
  • Windows installer is now avaiable, and the Windows version does no longer require any other software packages to be installed.
  • Binaries are created for many more Linux distributions, and download repositories are available.
  • FS-UAE now compiles and runs on Mac OS X 10.5 (both x86 and PPC) and FreeBSD.
  • And many more changes (see the Changelog for details).
See the release notes for more information about this release and a detailed list of changes. Also, many thanks to translators, contributors, and everyone who has been testing the development versions and reported bugs and issues!

Brilliant stuff! Wish I could get it to compile on my Raspberry Pi... :)

Nice! Are physical Amiga formatted hard drives supported under Linux?

Awesome! I'll make an ebuild for Gentoo and submit to the portage tree :)

Yes and no! It does not support it directly, but it does support hard drive images in RDB format, and in Linux you can access the HD device as a file, so it will probably work. For example:

Code:

hard_drive_0 = /dev/sdc
I know people have used HD-formatted compact flash cards this way with FS-UAE under Linux. Remember to give your user permission to access the file. And keep a backup, just in case ;)

Cool and all but...

...why don't it run on MorphOS, OS 4.x, or AROS?

Like all software, it runs on the operating systems it has been designet for. Someone needs to work on support for MorphOS and/or OS 4.x and/or AROS for FS-UAE to work those systems. I don't develop for, nor use/have any of those systems :(

I'm not a coder, but I know there are people in the MorphOS Zone forums that have been looking into setting up developers with hardware and a liscence.

If you have the interest/time of course.

I like learning new stuff, so it could no doubt be an interesting project, but it is mostly about time - because I can instead spend the same time improving FS-UAE (and associated projects) for the currently supported platforms. I still have much I want to do, and I don't think I'll be finished any time soon :).

How about a Windows RT version for the Microsoft Surface?

As far as I understand it, Windows RT will only let people install software via the Microsoft Store - a "walled garden" approach to computing which I don't like at all :(. And they don't even bother to support OpenGL. Microsoft is making it very hard for me to care for this platform, so there will most likely not be a version of FS-UAE for this platform.

I'll perhaps tinker with an Android port at some point though...
