I found the battery I was using was old, no good. I got a new battery (3.6V Ni-MH) and tried again. This time, things went better. It has been working for days now, keeping a charge.
Basically the - side of the battery is connected to the GND pin 9 on the wire wrap socket. The + side goes from the resistor shown to the battery.
Is it safe, does it work? Yes, for days now. Left on running for many hours. Off over night and during the day. I get home turn it on, and time...

So far it has not blown up my C64, the 1st SID I know, is tested and working. I have not connected the 2nd sid to audio out yet. I made a lead for connecting the audio out from jumper leads, will work with a regular CDROM cable. I'll connect the end of that to a phono in-plug.

2nd board & try. I had to get a cooler iron (20W) and some 63/37 solder. Then things started to go fine.
