Just a small update. I had taken a little bit of a break to simply USE this computer, but I am not moving forward again. I am proceeding with installing a 1581 disk drive internally.

The picture below is misleading, it is more difficult than simply throwing a common PC floppy drive in a 5.25->3.25 adapter. A typical PC floppy drive will not work. An original 1581 drive is the wrong dimensions and has no standard faceplate. What was used in the end was a modified Chinon FZ-357A drive. This did not have a faceplate, so one had to be adapted. The original LED does not operate for the 1581 activity and had to be removed. Another LED was mounted and will be connected to the 1581 controller board. A single toggle switch was added to be able to switch between drive 8 and 10.

With any luck, I will have enough time tomorrow night to finish installation. I will post an update with more pictures if I get it finished.

I am also again considering installing a SBC internally for use with 64HDD. The uIEC lacks a single feature, Geos support. For this alone I am considering it. If I do that, I will have 5 devices to juggle. 4 of the 5 devices will need to be device #8 at some point, which makes juggling ever more complicated...

    Another short update to say 1581 integrating is complete!

    The switch is for 8/10 drive number selection.

    There is where the 1581 controller board is mounted. Of course, it is being powered by the ATX power supply!

    That's it for tonight, not feeling all that hot. I will do some more tomorrow with any luck..

    A very nicely done install Jim, congrats!

    I read somewhere that disks formatted on the 1581 can still be read/written by a standard PC 3.5" 1.44MB drive - though not at MS-DOS level?

    Regards Valentin

    @Valentin

    Thanks for the compliment

    Yes, you can read 1581 disks under Windows with certain tools like Omniflop.

    I don't bother with that that, since I have a uIEC I can just move the compact flash card between the PC running Windows or Linux and the 128T. Much more convenient.
