In the last issue of Amiga Future magazine, the price of the AmigaOne X1000 was hinted to be around 1500 Euro, hopefully not higher. There was no mention of the VAT included or not, so I take the worst case without VAT. VAT in European Union is around 20%. This price does not include shipping which may be 100 Euro for cheapest delivery possible, including insurance. So to have AmigaOne X1000 for me I will have to pay 1800 Euro.
The price may sound high, especially in today's economy and it is really high. It is for a complete system, but it is high nevertheless.
Compare it with the IYONIX pc prices, it is normal.
Compare it with the Mac prices, it is not that expensive.
Compare it with the PC prices it is very expensive.
Compare it with the consoles prices with PPC chips inside, it is very very expensive.
After the king of the price reduction in the computer business - Commodore went bankrupt in 1994, the Amiga is expensive and always will be. Back in 1980ies and 1990ies, a major multi-billion corporation like Commodore was able to do cost reduction by well developed network of suppliers, fast development and research, cheap manufacture and even owning chip factories. After the demise of Commodore, there is no possibility anymore for such collaboration. The companies producing hardware for the Amiga market are small businesses with limited resources. They can not afford to purchase large quantities of products, also they can not take the risk of developing high end products for limited market.
There is minimal chance of the price of AmigaOne X1000 going down. It will not go down. But the most hardcore Amigans will purchase it nevertheless. The same people who purchased Mediators, CyberStorms and Blizzards, along with extra memory, Graphics Boards and even sound cards for thousands of Euros, will still be glad to have powerful Amiga hardware. Whatever the price. For the rest of the people who enjoy the classic Amigas or UAE, nothing will change. The classic Amigas will be there as long as people continue to enjoy them.
For me, the appearance of the AmigaOne X1000 is good for the Amiga.
