Anyone know whether AC97 audio is CPU dependant? I mean its called CODEC and as such id presume it needs the cpu for the calculations?

It eats CPU power up, so it sucks! Just buy a Sound Blaster Live Value, they own! :-D

It used to be... Some do quite a bit in hardware now. It seems like the newest SoundMAX series isn't too bad.
@kd
I have a SB Live!, and I must say it's a piece of carp. Plus, Creative has really pissed me off with it's policy of grouping everything (including the kitchen sink) in with the EAX driver, and forcing it all installed if you want the AudioHQ EAX control... (Granted, you can go back and manually uninstall the other stuff afterwards, but why should I need all that hassle???) Personally, it's the LAST Creative card I'm ever owning....

@Ilwrath
I'm with you here, as my SBLive is dead after less than a year,
and I also really hate all the crap it installed onto my system.
Anybody who knows a good card that is also well supported by
Linux ? Teratec any good ?

My good old SB16 Vibra has worked good for me since 1996 ;-)
It's not fancy but it does whats its supposed to do.

@kronos
My mate's just got a Teratec card, and it's great for home recording and all that stuff, but probably overkill if you just want to play games and stuff like that.
Waaaah! That last post was actually me... Bobson was still logged in on my machine and I didn't realize!

I have a Terratec EWX 24/96, and it's certainly a good card for its price (I paid about 200 euros). It's fully supported in ALSA.
I previously had an SBLive!, and it's gotta be the worst piece of crap I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. At least I'll know to avoid any Creative products like the plague from now on...

I'm using a C-media 8738.
Fantasic value considering it only cost me less than 16$/€!

The SBLive! actually HAS an AC97 onboard IIRC!
