Ladies' nights 'discriminatory' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3771339.stm)

This is insane! Don't those guys know that the ones who really gain the most on a "Lady's Night" are the guys?!? Some people are just too dumb to live!!!

It's certainly discrimination, but that doesn't mean it should be illegal. Generally, we live in a society (at least, the US and UK) where price discrimination is perfectly legal (the most obvious example being insurance policies). Compare with say, employment, where discrimination is not allowed.

I don't see why it's "insane" - it's a legitimate thing to complain about, but the worry is it's one that has far reaching implications (if this means that all price discrimination is illegal).

He says "We tried a guys' night years ago, but nobody turned up. No women came so the guys didn't stick around," but the thing is that there may be plenty of other nightclubs around offering cheaper prices for women. If the norm was that men got in free and women didn't, they'd have to choose between staying at home or paying up, and you can bet that they'd be playing the sexual discrimination card (just like is done when there's sexual discrimination against woman in any other aspect of life).

As for the idea that the guys gain from a ladies' night.. well I dunno, the nightclubs I go to with equal prices manage an equal mix of men and women, and the problem with anything that encourages more women to come along is that more men come along too. The only one who benefits is the nightclub owner.

Nah, it has nothing to do with prices. When it's "ladies night", the bars are packed with girls. The advantage for the guys is, that they get to drool-over/fight-over/hit-on more girls. Ask any guy which they would prefer: cheaper drinks or a sea of horney girls, and see what they say!

And besides, the cold reality is that the guys will end up buying the girls drinks anyway, however, if drinks are cheaper for girls, then the guys stand to save some money that way, right?

Nope, this is a lose-lose situation, and I'm sure those who brought this on will regret it (unless they're gay, but then, why would they be going to a bar with a "ladies night").

As long as you don't load the question (ie, it's more like cheaper drinks versus more girls in the club, who aren't necessarily interested in you, and there will probably be more guys along as a result too), I don't think they all will. This one guy didn't - and indeed, this is the very point about discrimination: he doesn't want to be judged based on his gender, when such judgements might not be true.

It's a lose situation because in practice I doubt there'd be cheaper drinks for guys too, or an averaging out of prices, but more likely that all drinks will end up at the higher prices..

As for regretting it, this guy might have a girlfriend, or he might be capable of pulling the girls there without needing to bring in extra girls who are so cheap they can't even afford the standard price (or even, *gasp* he might prefer to find girls at places other than nightclubs, but have other reasons for wanting to go to a nightclub).
