UN to get control of the internet?
Let's see how many liberals agree with this. (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&u=/ap/20040327/ap_on_re_us/un_overseeing_the_net_1&printer=1)

Internet: By the people for the people.
Basically, I feel that the internet is at its best when left alone, sadly, its also at its worst. But I also feel that the internet should remain a completely free medium, by free I mean free from State or Commercial interference of any sort. That means that M$ and its Paladium software should be banned from ever comming near the internet, and that Cisco should stop selling China hardware that blocks sites that the Government doesn't like.
No one must ever be allowed to *own* the internet, ever, to own is to control, and no one has the right to control such a vast communication gateway.

Punish the crime, not the opportunity.

I thought that the 'world wide web' was not considered under ANY jurisdiction of law?? That's what makes it so hard for proscecution and sh!t?!??
Seems to me that NO one should have ANY control over the internet, even though local countries do what they want with it anyways?? :-(

Those times are GONE!
It got popular and that ofcourse meant it got commercialized.
Internet is already to a huge extent controled by commercial forces.
"VeriSign Inc" look no further. Wasnīt that the ones that tried to replace the "domain not found" with a searchpage?
Also you get your connection from a commercial company and they gets their connection....
And some phone/"telecommunication" company owns the physical wires.
Itīs not academical playground funded with public funds.
As for ICANN in the long run itīs either the UN or moving to Swizerland, I think the later would be preferable.
Or they could always set up offices in various taxparadises, where foregin and international law would have a hard time to reach them.
