Lou Vidal, an enthusiastic Amiga supporter, QAUG (Queens Amiga User Group) President and a favorite figure at many Amiga conventions, was killed this past Friday on his way to the LICA (Long Island Commodore/Amiga) group meeting.
Special Effects Artist, Cecilia, passed along the following;
Last friday, Lou was supposed to get picked up by Thomas to come to the local LICA meeting. When Thomas showed up he said he tried calling Lou several times and didn't know where he was.
Since we know Lou, this just didn't sound right.
After the meeting, we went to a local resturant to chat and around midnight the police called Thomas on his cell (because that was the last number called on Lou's phone). Naturally they didn't tell us anything, but we were really not feeling good at all.
Unfortunately, it turned out that Lou had been hit by some moron ("The driver of the Car was arrested, he has multiple suspensions on his license" is what I was told) and has passed away. What a bummer.
Just last saturday we had a QUAG meeting and as usual the energy was high and things were their usual chaos....tons of fun!
I said that this was "The Lou Effect" because I've never seen such craziness! Lou had a good laugh over that. I'm glad I got to contribute this, small though this may be.
Lou was great guy and will be sorely missed!
Wow, that is very poor news to end the the day on.
Please send my sympathies to the family and maybe
even an address through private mail where we
might send a card or flowers.

Lou was one of the few people, I actually liked.
Most people I just kinda tolerate.
I was in tears when I wrote the Email telling people about it. I and many people in the NY area will miss Lou becuase as Cecilia put it. He may of been in the background but his presense was felt and alway's in a good way. His warmth and charm will be missed.

..we had 2 tragic accidental deaths in our family during last 2 years, both were young people, so I feel with you.. BUT remember - "Death is the final release from eternal slavery, from the cycle of misery and perpetual vanity.."

:-( My sympathies to everyone.
It sounds like Lou lived life as full as he could, and touched people with his craziness.
At least he gets to me Jay now :-)
Hoya!

This is very sad news indeed.
I met Lou several times while at Amiwest.
He was a friendly fellow and a true Amigan.

Please sincerely pass on my sympathy and good wishes to Lou's family. As an Amigan he had more friends than he probably knew even though each of us rarely meet, I am from Australia and proud of what Lou has been doing in promoting and supporting something we both love. It hurts us as a community to loose someone who was obviously so active.
Tthe QAUG/LICA members my best wishes also, I am sure you will dedicate future efforts in Lou's name.

I was emailing a friend about Lou and this situation and after a suggestion that we should all drink to Lou's memory, I had a sudden recollection of a meeting at QUAG we had several months ago.
Someone suggested having drinks (maybe it was around xmas?) Lou found shot glasses and passed around whatever people asked for. I think I had a kalua. Others had scotch.
I don't think I was ever at a computer meeting where some of us were trying to get "drunk". It was a real hoot!
I swear, Lou ended up sitting on the floor and we all laughted like loons.
Believe it or not, we actually got work done that meeting. Just don't ask me what! (Of course, the drinking, which was mostly one or at the most 2 drinks per person, really took place near the end of the meeting)
The thing we all left with was the great time we had. people have sometimes asked why bother with Amiga? Isn't it "dead"??? It can never be what it was once promised to become....etc.
Well, for me, Amiga is getting together with people and having a good time. Solving or just trying to solve a few computer problems. having a laugh! Lou sitting on his own floor while we play with his AmigaOne!
As long as we remember this, we will never lose the real amiga spirit.
And I think what offends me most is the idea that the naysayers and the people that make all the negative noise should somehow get more headlines than the people like Lou that did so much to keep things together.
I simply refuse to let that happen!

I have only been to the Quag meeting once and Lou helped me to understand more about the Amiga and eyebrows. I am sorry for his loss and he will be deeply missed.
