Vernal Elm LLC (http://www.vernalelm.com) is offering a holiday sale price on Motorola 68060 50MHz processors that is good until December 31, 2002. They are only $85 each.

The CPUs are full versions (MMU/FPU), so they're the right kind for Amiga accelerators, systems, etc., and are cheap enough to pick up a spare. They also include a 30-day unconditional return guarantee, which is also nice.

060... A Great processor :-)

I always dream to have a dual 060 card in my 1200 :-)

Where could you get a empty accelerator card from?

I don't know :-(

Good point, "I" have never come across a dead
Motorola CPU, its always something else.

"only"? :-o :-o :-o

On the other hand, that doesn't beat my 220$ Athlon 750! :-D :-D

Yeah that's damn cheap! Amiga dealers typically stock them for ~$250, and Digikey sells them for $495!!!!! :-x

It's not that the card is 'empty' what often happens is someone already owns an 040 based card, that can be upgraded to an 060. They ran at different voltages, but for some accelerators, the difference between the 040 and 060 models was maybe a dip switch and a device for stepping down the voltage...excuse me if my technical term for modifying the voltage is slightly off (for any electricians reading this)

So....if you are someone like this, or you find a cheap 040 card that you know can be upgraded...now you can get it up to speed at 060 fairly cheaply.

But aren't most 040s on turboboards soldered?

I´ve never heard of an upgradeable 040 amiga accelerator...

I have an ACT Apollo 1240 and this has a jumper for
whether an 060 or 040 is on the card. Does this
mean that if I got a pin compatible 060 and a 50MHz
crystal I could upgrade it? Anyone know as I'm loath
to spend the £200 + on a new accelerator.

The Apollo 4060/3060 and its little brother the 4040/3040
has a socketed cpu and you can switch it to use 040 or
060 processor. Unfortunately you also need to plug in a
special power converter mini-addon since the 060 is so
much less power-hungry than the 040.

Had a 060 from the beginning, so I don't know if there are
any other more subtle differences between the Apollo
4040/3040 and the 4060/3060, but I doubt it.

The Cyberstorm MK3 / PPC can be converted, although with a bit of very fiddly soldering.

You haven't? I have, and a friend of mine successfully upgraded his Cyberstorm mk2 from 040 to 060. All that's required is some (precise) soldering (two SMT resistors and a wire jumper need to be moved) and the addition of a 3.3 v voltage regulator. There's a web page out there describing the procedure, just do a search on google.
