Someone at The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/25238.html) Certainly keeps tabs on us Amiga folk. Check out the link above to see what they are reporting.
The Register is also available as a US version at:

Heh, I thought that Ben shouldn't have posted those comments quite yet because nothing has been announced. You would think that a comment in a flamefest on ANN would not get picked up, but it did!

Well any publicity is good at least people are hearing the word Amiga more.
Sort of subliminal conditioning :-D

I'm absolutely stunned to see a post on an obscure Amiga related forum pop up on the Register.
I will need to watch what I post very, very carefully in the future.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that Amiga OS 4 would attract such mainstream attention.
The Register is read by hundreds of thousands of IT professionals and enthusiasts every day.
II don't have an anti nVidia biais BTW, I just pointed out that the balance of power can shift very rapidly indeed.
A point which was well taken by the Register editor.

This kind of thing is mainly why I want OS4 and the A1, and not any other solutions. AInc is very amibitious and keeps a keen eye on new events all the time. Its competitor IMHO does not.

Based on the flash animation on matrox.com, in under 4 days they will be releasing something new, with plenty of promo for it all around their website. So obviously it's something -big-.

So when will Amiga buy out Matrox?
Then we'll own a graphics company to create propriotary hardware.
Actually on the other hand why don't we port the OS to fastest super computer currently available. That way Amiga is way ahead of everyone in terms of software and hardware.
the only problem is that the computer would cost $4 million dollars.
damn!!

'Amiganauts' ?
Never heard that one before - at first glance I thought it said
'Amiganuts' ;-)
Good coverage at any rate! Ben didn't see that one coming!

Hopefully around the time Hyperion buys out Firaxis and Squaresoft...keeping my fingers crossed! :-)
Glad to see some more good PR. I think we've got a chance at getting it right this time...

People said the same thing about 3DFX a few years ago.

Yeah...That was the first thing I thought when Ben made the comment on Ann, but I figured it would blow past and any forthcoming announcements would be made without someone bringing attention to it. Hope this don't cause him any problems or setbacks, as everyone seems to be quoting him on their web sites.
I don't know how much (if any or all) of the "hoax" specs are accurate, but if Matrox have a card that is comparable to or better than a top of the line GeForce, then I'll be happy. And you know, Ben is right. A couple of years ago 3Dfx was "King of the Hill". Games were constantly geared towards their hardware. Now nobody even recognizes 3Dfx (as they were bought out by nVidia) Matrox or ATI could very well come up with "The Next Big Thing"(tm).

Ati have almost caught up with there radeon cards so theres always a chance that matrox can catch up or beat them nvidia cards are not the best graphics quality anyway. what happend to the days when a computer was bought and nothing was thought a bout graphics and processor speed.
Then again maybe its what they call progress. :-) :-D

In the end, it just adds to the hype regarding the Matrox product.
So Matrox probably aren't too upset - I mean, it is obvious that people know that there is something coming anyway, they have a teaser on the website.
Hey, I bet sales on other top end gaming graphics cards will have dropped this week in anticipation anyway!
Lets hope that Matrox did not contact AInc, Hyperion, etc, with bad words to say!

Yeah the 8500 series Radeon cards are close in performance to the Geforce 3 range. But debates are (and always will be) around as to which one is actually better. I did buy a Geforce3 Ti200 for my PC at Christmas, just for the driver support and games compatability. Wish now I had just got the Radeon 8500.
As for computer and graphics speed, you are right, times have changed and so has the way we use our systems. For general purpose use, those things don't matter as much. But for playing the latest and greatest games, watching DVD movies and such, it matters alot (especially on a PC) The more powerful the hardware, the more impressive software you will see.

Ummm... Just went to the Matrox website and then to their forums. It is VERY MUCH a real product. The moderator there is talking about it as well (there are several threads for "G1000") This is his reply to a couple of the questions (so maybe Ben was not too hasty with his info!) :
Haig, when will we see some benches from the new card?
I think once we announce our product or once the editors start posting their benchmarks, we'll do the same.
so some editorial sites already have the card then, or soon?
I think some do along with some devlopers have them as well.

He also said that the official name will not be something to be confused with the "older line of cards" but would be a single word, which is also the name of the chip. We can probably deduct from that statement that the official name will be "Parhelia"

Someone on Matrox Forum
What is the minimum system requirement recommended for this new card ?
Matrox' reply:
Hasn't been determined yet but I think it will be ~ a 600Mhz cpu.

600Mhz CPU? :-) Gee, what do we know will be at least that?

Let's see what nVidia has to do against this with
their NV30 released in August. nVidia's CEO said its
the most important chip for his company since
nVidias foundation.

it really does not matter what nVidia has got commuing out as fare as amiga goes,
as we will not get drivers for it.
but at least amiga will have some top end card available for once. with ATI & Matrox

That caught my eye also. That is "minimum" , but anyways confirms that A1 will have what is required to run the card. However, I am still concerned that such a high powered card would need AGP 4X to achieve it's full potential. But at least it sounds as though there will be a couple of choices for those who want to pick and choose. ;)

You and I can both agree voodoo3 drivers where a HUGE improvement over old miggy gfx cards Alkemyst! And that was on our classic boxes with very limited PCI bandwidth. I can only imagine something of this calibre on my A1G3 600Mhz and PPC AOS. Yummy! Before anyone says 'It will be faster on my 5Thz P6 w/AGP24X' I am talking about on an Amiga.

Well when he says 600mhz minimum he is probably talking about the wimpiest of cpus like Celron and Duron. A G3 is much faster cycle for cycle than a Celron.
I seriously doubt even pro X86 folks will try and say a Celron is better than a G3. :-P

redrumola, you're probably right about that Matrox guy having something so low in mind...as a minimum. The reason I pointed it out was because of the AmigaOne starting at 600mhz.

Yeah, I agree completely. But just as a measure of saying it meets the required "600Mhz". I'm sure the G3 will perform just fine at 600Mhz.

Since Matrox is a 'partner' of Amiga, hopefully this means the AmigaOne and OS4.0 will be listed as supported platforms on Matrox's website:-D

I doubt it.
1) Because Matrox just names official drivers
2) OS4 won't be supporting the new Matrox card at
the beginning
3) 'partner' means more or less 'you'll get dev infos'.

Problem with Ben’s post…
I don’t think one can compare a semi-DirectX 9 class GPU to a DirectX 8.x class GPU and claim victory.
One has to understand that both ATI (i.e. ~R300) and nVidia has their own direct-X 9 class GPUs in the works.
Ben has made the same flawed comparisons for “X86 vs PPC” comparisons by including Motorola’s next generation product (i.e G5). The x86 industry has it’s own next generation product in the pipe line i.e. AMD’s K8 points to this progression.
Ben is just looking from a single perceptive.
Relative to its competitors, I’m pretty skeptical about Motorola’s record of delivering the next generation product in the timely fashion, e.g. 68040 clock speed limit and lateness of G4’s 1 Ghz race.
(I’m aware of IPC + faster clock speed = faster CPU product)...
