A500 runs with 512K Chip Ram, OCS chipset and usually Kickstart/Workbench 1.3

A500+ runs with 1Mb ChipRam, ECS Chipset and Kickstart/Workbench 2.04

Select About from the Workbench menu for versions
1.3 = 34
2.04 = 37/38

Showconfig or Sysinfo type programs will give more information.

Assuming it hasn't been modified, when you switch on the machine you are presented with a *'kickstart' screen telling you which version it is.

*As long as no disk in drive, or HDD attached etc.

Sorry to point out the obvious, but doesn`t it say on the case?

Failing that, purple boot-up screen with disk going in the disk drive for Plus as opposed to a white screen with a hand holding a disk for original A500.

what´s the difference between A500 and A600? Is A600 fully "A500-compatible"?

The A600 is equivalent to the A500+, with the addition of an IDE controller, a PCMCIA slot, updated Kickstart (to cope with these slots), but without the numeric keypad.

IDE-controller? Can I use any Ide-hd with A600?

Yup. But a 3,5" HD will be hard to fit, if not impossible (unless you want to have it dangling outside your case).

Another problem could be the size of the HD in terms of megabytes. WB 3.1 supports a HD size upto ~4.3 gig. For using bigger HDs you need (AFAIK) at least OS 3.5. My guess is that 2.x also supports upto 4.3gig.

ooiu,

you probably want to stick to 2.5" IDE-drives (3.5"-sized drives are too big to fit inside the Amiga 600 case).
