Hi,

My brother finally agreed to give me his A1200 that was collecting dust. I want to put a laptop HD in it. I noticed laptop drives don't have power supply, is the power provided through the IDE cable? Also where do I get a laptop HD cable? Any info on what is needed is appreciated. Thanks for help!

Eyetech can supply you with the necessary cable.

2.5" drives do get their supply through the cable.

Go HERE (http://www.eyetech.co.uk) to check out Eyetechs site.

Yes, laptop harddrives are powered through the cable.

The only real problem I've had installing 2.5" hds has been bending a pin and burning the drive out at powerup. Careful with the pins, it is not always easy to tell where they fit.

You will also need a cradle to keep the drive from laying on the motherboard or shield.

Get a ribbon cable that is at least 8" long and flexible or it will be hard to work around.

Good luck.

Lawless:

I searched all the good pc shops in the Village and no one had any. I bought the components and tool and now make my own. Everyone sells laptops but nobody sells the cables in my experience. I went to all the major and most of the minor computer stores around.

That's life in the village.
